Stolen Ipad- any ideas

Asking on behalf of friend: ipad left on plane. Returned within 10 minutes and it is gone. Can track it to area near airport. Only one person left plane behind this passenger. Owner had to fly 1500 miles home. Police in town where ipad is currently located were called and no report can be filed unless in person. Need police report for insurance (and any remote chance of recovery). It is locked, but not wiped clean.
Any thoughts about how to proceed would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bummer, will the police skype? As for insurance, would you get much back after the deductible?

You can wipe it on the cloud.

He /she should be able to get a police report off their website to fill out.

Thanks, ellemenope. Skype is interesting. Low deductible ($25) insurance - go students!

ek4- Owner is concerned as his understanding is that wiping it on the cloud=no tracking possible. Seems unlikely to be recovered though and the risk of not wiping it clean could outweigh tracking benefit soon. It is locked. Don’t know how secure that is.

He can also contact pawn shops in area and craigs list
I think wiping it is the best cause tracking it isnt really doing much good.

I had a house break in and lost mine right before Christmas. Couldn’t wipe it because overseas and no iCloud at the time. Just changed all passwords to anything. It had been a Christmas present to me from my son and daughter. Nothing I could do about Ali Baba and his thieves and the sort of loss, not just the iPad that I experienced. Awful.

If you set up Find My IPad, then you can also remotely lock it, too. Not that it helps recover it, but makes it useless for new person.

Thanks for the input. It seems like airports are perfect for this crime as people are on the move and you have to report it in person. If there are any ideas for reporting in addition to skype, I’d pass those on as well. It seems a bit anachronistic to have no way to file a report without physical presence.

If they try to guess the password, the device wipes after ten failed tries.

I just bought a new travel vest and it includes an iPad pocket which may make it easier to travel with. I generally don’t plan to travel with the iPad - an iPod Touch is sufficient for me.

I would never leave my ipad at home to get lonely.

Is it possible that an airline employee found it? D left her kindle on a plane at Christmastime and she eventually (about 3 weeks later) got it back–it seems to take a while for things to show up in the airline’s lost and found department, but it might be worth filing a report.

According to a very good friend, the OP can use iCloud to delete everything, and then claim it through his credit card. If he used AmEx, he would have 12 months guarantee.

Perhaps other credit cards also have this protection. I think my Visa does too.
