Stomach extending after eating

Does your stomach extend a lot after eating. Today I had a cup of plain coffee, then 2 eggs with bacon crumbles for breakfast. At lunch I had salmon and a 1/2 cup of Brown rice. Drank green tea. My stomach looks like I’m 4 months pregnant. Itscwasnt bad when I woke up. This is all the time. What is going on?

Visit a doctor for a check up. Discuss any pain, discomfort, etc. You might need to strengthen your abdominal muscles.

Keep a food diary for a few days before you see your doctor. I have a free app called Food, my symptoms by SkyGazer labs and it’s useful for compiling data that will hopefully be illuminating.

I agree about seeing a doctor, especially if this is a new thing.

Yes - head to the doctor - I would encourage you to do so as soon as possible.

Go see a doctor, if nothing’s wrong then it’s probably loss of abdominal muscle tone. Doing sit-ups will help.

Just don’t do crunches. 99% of folks do them incorrectly. Useless stress on the spine without any real benefit. OK, I am exaggerating about 99%, but that’s not that far off.

Go see the doctor. I’ve known people who had this sort of bloating because of digestive tract issues such as reflux. That would require a different kind of management than loss of muscle tone would. There’s no point making a lot of effort to treat the wrong problem, right?

There can be some fairly serious conditions where this is a symptom. It is probably not one of those, but go see your doctor to make sure.

I have my annual appointment next week and will bring this up! I just figured a lot of women had this problem, but guess not.

I had a friend who went through that–distention but also discomfort–several years ago and had a lot of medical tests to try to find out if it was GI or gyno related. I it was related to her colon so she had to change her diet. Even though she was a careful eater before, she had to avoid foods that aggravated her condition.

Once I hit 55, my dietary habits had to change, it seemed one after another.

It started with taking (most all) dairy out my my diet (this was probably the cause of my bloating and sluggish feeling after I would eat) - thank goodness for almond milk and other products that don’t include dairy.

After that I learned a lot (maybe too much!) about GMOs and have worked diligently to remove whatever I could that might be GMO out (and let me tell you, nearly everything with corn - which I love!).

As of August last year my D (a very health conscious woman) has me on nearly all organic (including my one cup of coffee a day) - I say nearly, because obviously when I’m out I can only do so much to control what I eat. But I do try to stay as “close to the source” as possible.

Several notable changes…I have far more energy and stamina, my weight has remained steady for 3 years (not going above 152, and if it fluctuates it has only been a 2 pound fluctuation in either direction), recent blood work shows that a “higher” cholesterol number has reduced substantially and is now in the healthy range, and most of all I no longer have that bloated and sluggish feeling after eating.

I’ve often wondered if it was the dairy products that are one culprit. But I have osteopenia and need calcium. I’m not sure calcium supplements will do the trick. I only use almond milk, but I eat one low carb, low sugar yogurt a day. Plus, I love cheese in any form. But I will bloat even without eating these. I’ll be curious as to what the doctor says, but I might try to cut out dairy the next few weeks also, and see if that helps. Oh, and what is a GMO?

Genetically Modified Organism

I am surprised to hear not that many people experience bloating. I am a petite woman. When I wake up in the morning my stomach is generally fairly flat, but as day goes by I notice my stomach gets bigger and I feel bloated. In speaking with my sister and SIL, they also experience similar bloating feeling.

I have the same issue. I’m very healthy and I notice it is worse for me when I eat bread and pasta. If I stay on a low carb diet it is much better. I’ve had strangers ask me when I’m due. They are usually embarrassed when I tell them I’m not pregnant. One woman became a friend and she said she asked because otherwise I’m extremely fit and lean.

My future DIL has it really bad. She is just past 100 lbs and sometimes after eating she can look 6 months pregnant. She has a lot of stomach issues and is under the care of several different specialists. She is lactose intolerant and lactose makes it worse.

Just remembering…when my friend put everyone in her family on a special kind of diet to deal with various issues, the first thing she noticed was how flat everyone’s stomach became. I can’t remember the deails but I think it was no processed food, gluten free, dairy free, and low carb, but they could eat sweet potatoes.

Of course, first make sure not GI issue, ovarian issue (which can cause stomach issues)!!! Then you can work on your dietary changes.

Seeing a doctor to rule out anything bad is the best advice. Get a good physical with a blood work up.

But if all is well otherwise…Keep a food journal and see if the bloat occurs with particular foods. Sometimes as we get older we can get lactose intolerant and this can cause bloat. There are lots of other food sensitivities that can contribute as well.

You can also try over the counter gas aids or digestive enzymes or fiber and see if any of those help you, again, keep notes of which you try and which work best
