I was accepted to both Stony Brook University and University of Rochester. I will be attending for a mathematics degree. From what I’ve read in rankings Stony Brook University is ranked #82 best college and University of Rochester is ranked #32 for best college. In mathematics it looks like only graduate school is ranked (unlike business and engineering). Stony Brook is ranked #25 for mathematics and University of rochester is ranked #68 in mathematics.

My question is, assuming both schools end up costing the same amount, Would it be better to get a degree in undergraduate mathematics in Stony Brook University or University of Rochester? I guess i’m interested in knowing if I should take the Graduate school ranking in to account or if for undergraduate study the best college overall is a ll that matters?

You may want to check what required and optional math courses are available at each school to determine each school’s math department’s suitability for you and your academic goals.

subject ranking mostly depends on Masters and PhD programs. Again school ranking has so many criteria including academic as a small part. as I know two of this university, I would choose Rochester if I was you . Hope this helps

U of R is a great school - Costs being equal, I would definitely consider it the front runner… How much time do you have to decide?

Is this actually the case? No school is worth a lot of debt.

@sdgal2 I have until June 20th to pay for UR and I already paid the deposit for Stony Brook. Today I received an official acceptance to the University of Illinois so now i’ll have to juggle three schools for a while.

@"Erin’s Dad" no, but I can afford both schools without any debt. Additionally I am transferring so It will only cost me for 2 years instead of 4.

UIUC or Rochester. UIUC has the better math department but there might be an advantage in going to UR in order to form connections for grad school or the job market since the school is smaller and likely has better connections.

Upper division math courses tend to be small (meaning good contact with faculty) at most schools, although you should try looking in each school’s class schedule to be sure.

URochester if it’s affordable, then UIUC over SB
