Stop Keeping College Athletes Poor and Trapped

“Without unions, college athletics will remain a subtle but insidious form of child abuse.” …

<a href=“Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: College Athletes Should Be Allowed to Unionize | TIME”>Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: College Athletes Should Be Allowed to Unionize | TIME;

How about one for parents and students demanding a decent K12 education?

I see that you just threw this out there waiting for comments. There are a few opinions I have on this. One is, should athletes be accepted into college having much lower test/gpa scores then everyone else in that college? I say no.
Colleges are academic institutions that happen to provide athletics as an extracurricular.
Should college athletes be unionized? Yes, no doubt about it. I say if someone is capitalizing off the work of others, then the others that are working should be compensated for their efforts and protected by a voice such as a union.
College sports are big business. I do not know why it is as big as it is. Maybe we in America have too much time on our hands and dough in our pockets. If we were all working hard and not wasting so much time watching TV, college sports would be what they should be; local games for locals and families to attend, and rarely televised.
Since it is big business and sensationalized then I say pay them. Not fair the money it generates goes only into the pockets of the greedy.

Most college athletics programs, even at many division I schools, are not big money makers by any stretch of the imagination.

AH correct. But the ones that are.

College football players were paid many years ago. That created disputes because seniors earned a lot more than freshmen and some seniors earned a lot more than other seniors.

Not too many big-time college athletic depts. operate in the black…but at least 70 colleges make enough money to pay their head football coaches over $1 million/year. Many college basketball coaches get paid big too. The 70 colleges with top earning coaches have together 7000+ football players…none of those players get $1 million+/year.

The NCAA takes in more than $6 billion a year.
The NCAA president made $1.7 million last year.
The NCAA top ten basketball coaches earn salaries that range from $2,200,000 to $9,682,032.
