Storage for summer for oos students

<p>Don’t forget to either find storage for your student’s stuff, or have them find storage.</p>

<p>My daughter goes to Baylor and has no car. Instead of having her schlep all her stuff home, only to fly back again with everything in August, today I rented 4 months of storage (5 x10 size, the smallest available) at $35/month prepaid until September 1st. </p>

<p>I thought the cost was pretty reasonable especially since the companies that store by box seem to charge about $20- 40/per box. i am hoping she will find 2 -3 other students to share her storage space at $45/each–making it very economicable for all . . . and I suggested for her to give free storage to the friend she finds who will be nice enough the weekend before finals to take her and her stuff to her storage unit.</p>

<p>A 5x10 storage should be enough room to store 4 - 6 people’s dorm stuff, esp since they shouldn’t have any furniture. </p>

<p>Now, storing her stuff next summer after being in an apartment all year – and acumulating a years worth of apartment stuff – will be a whole different matter. . .</p>

<p>Check with the school. My daughter’s school has rows of metal shelving in the basement of each dorm. Just schlep your stuff downstairs, labeled with your name, and grab it next fall. There’s special secure locked storage in another building for a limited number of “valuables” boxes for each student.</p>

<p>Last year I noticed the storage locker my son shared (one of those garage door like things) had gotten wet on the floor. So put your stuff up on pallets if you’re in one of those.</p>

<p>That can happen in the dorm’s storage as well. When I was in college, my roommate lost some things that way – including one irreplaceable thing, her high school yearbook.</p>

<p>The lesson from this is to never put anything irreplaceable in storage. Winter coats, bedding, textbooks, appliances, sure. If they get wrecked, you can buy more. But don’t store anything you would be horrified to lose.</p>
