Storm Warning: New Worm on the Loose

We haven’t seen this at CC, but there is a new variant of the Storm worm spreading that, when a user with an infected PC makes a blog or forum post, adds a link to an infected site.

So, be wary of links in posts (not just on CC, but any blogs, etc.), particularly if the link seems unrelated to the content of the post or is in every message from the poster. If you find a spurious link in something you have posted, seek tech help for your computer immediately.

NOTE: If you don’t click on a link, you are in no danger - the infection attempt occurs when you visit the remote site.

If you suspect an infected post here at CC, please use the “report” link inside the post to call it to the attention of our mod crew.

^ ummmm…

so is that link an infected link?

cuz the worm could be very clever if it spread forum posts like this and added its own link to the bottom.

Hmmm, good point, parkrunner. If you see the same link at the bottom of this post, I’m infected.

thanks for the warning

also, don’t click on stuff that has .exe at the end

it just screams ‘download!’ ie virus, etc. I’m not positive that is what .exe means. but I think its close.

i thought exe was something like execute. You know, all those free software that you can install’s exe…or most of the time.

exe –> executable

here you go: <a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EXE[/url]”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EXE&lt;/a&gt;

See, if we all just used UNIX the world would be a better place.

Does using Macs work out to be a good way to avoid viruses?

Yes .

Macs definitely have fewer viruses, although there is debate as to why that is. Some say it’s the Mac’s superior OS, others that the density of Macs isn’t enough to support a rapidly spreading virus. To use an analogy, a virus that infected people of European and Asian descent would have much greater infection potential in the U.S. than one that infected only those of Scottish origin.

Almost all of the big Internet worms have been targeted at Windows machines.

Thank god I’m using a mac. Goodbye Norton.

Yay for macs

I don’t think people have even been able to create viruses as bad as the ones for Windows for the Mac yet. I know there have been proofs of concepts though.

The thing about them not making viruses for macs because it has a small market share seems to be getting old. Apple is touting the fact that Macs don’t have viruses in ads, online, their site, everywhere! Don’t you think that hackers would love to prove them wrong?

Anyways, I’m on a mac…so yay for macs lol

The Internet Explorer isn’t a browser but an enthusiastic collector of viruses and trojans
Firefox and Opera ftw.
