Straight F's first quarter. (seriously)

Unfortunately I am serious, I’m a junior in high school and I just finished the first quarter with straight F’s and one D. I am in all AP classes except algebra 2. AP US, AP Econ, AP english 3, AP Physics, and Stats. I missed a lot of school, basically half the quarter, because of some serious medical issues. I had doctors’ notes and everything, but I had a really rough time catching back up while trying to keep up when I got back to school, and it just didn’t work out.
I’m sure I’ll be able to get at least all B’s in every class for the rest of the year, super confident I’ll pass the AP exams. but I’m afraid of how colleges will react to my complete failure first quarter.
I want to get into Ohio State, or atleast Ohio University (dont want to go out of state). My GPA is at about a 2.5 at this point in the year. I’m pretty active in clubs and volunteer work. Will they even consider me?

What was your GPA in previous years? Just make sure you explain what happened in the application.

freshman year i ended with a 3.8
dropped to a 3.0 by the end of sophomore year due to missing too much school.

Was it due to medical problems? Again, just make sure you explain what happened on the application. Start prepping for SAT/ACT right now and take SAT/ACT before January to see your current standing(If it’s low, I recommend attending SAT/ACT prep academy.).

My advice for SAT/ACT
Take SAT/ACT before January -> Study and take SAT/ACT again before summer starts -> If you are NOT pleased with your score(Before Summer one), study again throughout the summer -> Take one in Sept.

Stop all of your ECs, spend more time on your school work. If I were an adcom I would ask you why would you have time for ECs when you are missing classes.

Yes, All absences were due to medical problems. Thanks for the advice about the sat/act Spirral, I’ll definitely do that. I’ve been trying to find a tutor.

What state do you live in? Don’t try to find a tutor. They suck(99.99% of the time). If you are in NY, I recommend Test Takers(Private SAT prep academy) for SAT(I got up +400 score on SAT after having them for a week).

Edit

Reason why they suck:
1)They don’t teach you any techinques(You need techniques for SAT/ACT to perform well on them.)
2)They read their books 90% of the time when they are supposed to “tutor” you.
3)They rip you off big time. (Avg $60 per Hr… Are you kidding me?)

i live in Ohio. and wow, thanks for letting me know before i wasted money!

You didn’t get F’s because you failed test for which you didn’t study/understand the material, you got F’s because you were ill.
Can’t your school/your teachers suspend some of those grades and give you an opportunity to retake? Have you taken a tutor and gone to see the teachers after class?
Do they actually give you a zero on a quiz for which you’re absent due to being in the hospital or home sick? Then not provide any make up opportunity? And no tutoring/help?
I’m flabbergasted that a school would do that. How do kids with medical conditions do? Or are they all “conveniently” homeschooled so that school doesn’t have to “deal with them”?

You didn’t miss school because you wanted to - ask and see if you can “make up” those grades since you were ill and couldn’t be in class or take exams. You can try to bank everything on a final exam - ie., say you’ll take whatever grade for the quarter that your one exam grade is. Just one exam to show that you learned more than that F would suggest.

However, IF you were conspicuously absent from class but present for your favorite EC, I can see why that’d be a problem. But if you’ve been in class whenever your health allowed you to, you shouldn’t be penalized for something over which you had no control.

Some scholarships depend on your GPA and if you don’t make the cut off, they don’t care if it was because you were ill or playing CoD all day.

Go post your story and question in the Parents Forum. You’ll get lots of useful advice. That full-F quarter could seriously impact your college choices and admission and since they’re due to illness, you shouldn’t let that go hoping it’ll be “explained away”.
