Has anyone heard the strange dial-up-tone-esque noise coming out of computers, amplifiers, car radios, etc when the cellphone is about to ring? For some reason this occurs almost every time before there is an incoming call on my cell when the phone is close to the computer.

Furthermore, my friend picks up telephone calls from his computer. Is this normal? Can anyone provide a scientific explanation for these phenomena?

OMG! Finally someone who has the same thing happen to them! My car speakers make that weird beeping/dial-up noise right before my cell phone rings. It happens a lot when I’m listening to music with headphones. It’s so annoying.

I’ve always been under the impression that it’s RF interference being picked up by poorly shielded equipment. Best I can figure out, it happens when the phone and cell tower are undergoing their little electronic “handshake.”

But I’m sure someone can provide a better and more technical explanation than that.

I always assumed it had something to do with waves and all that. But that sort of stuff always happens so it doesn’t really bother me that much any more.

Computers seem to emit a very high-pitched noise that is especially noticeable in computer labs where there are a great number of computers running at the same time. It is EXCRUCIATING. I always get irritated by that sound but NO ONE else ever seems to be affected.

Yep! My Dad works in emergency services, so he carries two cell phones and two pagers/radios everywhere. One of his phones (Treo 700) talks to the network all time, it gets intercepted by his radios and makes noise pretty much non-stop. I’ve tried to tell him to separate them, but he doesn’t listen.

In my limited research I’ve had the same impression that UCLAri has.
