Strange reaction tonight from friend's husband re: LACs

Okay, I understand the hesitancy regarding LACs. The economy is tough. We want our kids to get a job when they are done with school. LACs are expensive. Etc., etc.

Tonight, a friend’s husband got extremely testy after mentioning the LACs we we had been visiting. To be frank, he was yelling. Calling LACs whack-a-doodle schools where they drink and smoke pot and the kids never get a job. His son will NOT be going to one of those schools. His son will go to a local Christian college, whether he likes it or not. No drinking. No parties. He’ll get a job. All for a reasonable price. Why would anyone spend over $200,000 for his child to experiment socially and ruin his life? His son will NOT be a disappointment to him (his words). This guy wouldn’t stop and made it very uncomfortable for the rest of us.

When he was done, he started describing a neighbor’s new tatas! Yeah - couldn’t get a grasp on his moral compass.

Just had to share. Not looking for a debate. I understand his reservations for sure. I didn’t quite understand his anger, though. And, for the record, this guy is loaded! He’s a well-respected doctor who just moved to a HUGE McMansion. He could easily afford an LAC education.

This reaction is completely over-the-top and not even rational. There’s more here than meets the eye; the topic is loaded with emotional baggage of some kind. No point in trying to figure it out.

^^Agree.

And don’t wear anything that reveals too much cleavage around this guy either. ;-)

At first, I thought you meant “loaded” as in drunk. Anyway, just b/c he moved to a large house doesn’t mean he has tons of money. It just means he wants to LOOK as if he has tons of money. Maybe that’s his issue: he’s already setting up why his son goes to a no name college.

In any case, there are people out there who don’t want to have a discussion about certain topics. They just want to blurt out their (unwelcome) opinion loud enough to discourage further discussion. Hopefully everyone else there was pleasant.

Yikes. What a bizarre outburst. I wonder what his day was like before this rant–it almost sounds like it’s the end of a conversation that had been started with someone else entirely (like maybe his son?).

His son could chose not to go to that school ya know.

Anyway, he sounds insane.

Ick, ick, ick…

I really hate the fact that some uneducated people assume if you attend an LAC, you are majoring in the humanities and won’t be employable. Oh, many Christian colleges are LACs! Duh!

Sounds like he has control issues. Goes with some ultra “Christian” lifestyles- not all. He doesn’t realize there is likely just as much going on at the colleges that are restrictive (compare it to ministers’ daughters getting pregnant- shouldn’t happen but does). Those Christian colleges ARE LACs, and many with poorer academic reputations than most other LACs and public colleges. Hard to believe this man made into medical school and beyond. His children won’t get as far as he did if he controls their early adulthood like that.

Can’t blame you for venting. He’s an embarrassment to those who consider themselves Christians and really do try to follow Christ’s morals. The most obnoxious control freak physicians in the hospital setting often are putty at home (overhearing them talking to their wives in the doctor’s lounge, etc. taught me this), this is unusual. Guess you won’t be welcoming him to your home in the future. He may be respected for his professional work but not his manners at work…

Maybe he doesn’t want his son to end up like him. If so, I think he’s making a pretty compelling case.

Bingo. I also hate the fact that in some quarters, being educated in the humanities – or maybe even being educated AT ALL – is considered to be inconsistent with religious faith. People like this give all of us Christians a bad name. :(

To be frank, he was yelling.

Oh my. I hope this wasn’t in your home. Sounds like a total jerk.

*When he was done, he started describing a neighbor’s new tatas! *

Wow, just wow!

I wouldn’t want to spend over 200k to send a kid to an LAC either, that’s ridiculous. I don’t agree with how he acted but he had some point hidden in there (not about a Christian college, that’s just as much of a waste of money).

If you are going to college to learn a humanties or a weak social science why bother spending 200k+. Something like medicine, engineering, etc. is a different story though.

A Christian college wouldn’t make sense though.

Some of the wildest kids I know attend Christian colleges-they are just sneakier about it. Kids who want to drink, party, have sex, etc will find a way no matter where they go to school. It’s similar to the idea that parents who don’t send their kids to public schools because of the drugs and alcohol- it’s just as bad in private schools but the kids have the money to buy it themselves instead of sneaking it out of friends houses

My guess is that the guy’s son has already had substance abuse problems.

He sounds like another Angry, Middle-Aged, Upper-Middle-Class Guy. We’re all probably better off if they vent their negativity occasionally, but why should it be in your presence? I do think he was rude to raise his voice, dominate the conversation, and go off-topic about the neighbor. Add him to the list of guys you’re glad you’re not married to, and say a prayer for his kid.

And, re post # 12 - what is a “weak social science”?

Anti-intellectualism is alive and well in the USA…and on CC, as certain posters in this thread demonstrate.

This guy sounds like a self-important boor who listens to too much talk radio and thinks that it is acceptable to speak to people that way in real life. One runs into them all too often these days.

Hey PurpleDuckMan, I went to an LAC (a really good one), and most of the people I know from there who majored in “weak social science” are making way over $200K a year. In my experience, the “weak social science” majors make more than the engineer types after the first few years out. The model I’ve seen is, learn how to think, then go out and clean up in business.

He’s still dealing with the fact that he believes he (and everyone else) is descended from incest between Cain and his sisters. The dumbness of LACs in his mind is reflection of the incest effects.

the guy is a nut job who doesnt know what he is talking about. Ignore him, as you would a person ranting on the street corner that “the world will end tomorrow!”
nuf said…

Quick question: is he, by any chance…running for public office?
