Strange Swimming Pool Question - Cleaning Between Tile & the Coping

Hi,

I do plan to ask at the local pool supply tomorrow, but their employees aren’t very helpful, so I thought I would try you smart people. Our pool has the normal row of tiles around the top BUT the tiles don’t completely butt up against the top. Instead there is about 1" of white plaster or thinset or grout (but doesn’t look like the grout between the tiles). Whatever it is is really dirty and even seems to be wearing away. After watching some pool tile repair videos I really think it’s thinset and the geniuses just used it to cover the space when they laid the tile. I’m wondering if I could just put another coat of ‘something’ on top that would cover it up and look better? Maybe a water proof caulk? This area is above the waterline unless we get major rain and the pool overflows.

Any ideas? We tried cleaning it last year and maybe it helped a little, but where it’s wearing away I need another solution. We had the pool replastered last year, but left DH here with the guys and he forgot to ask them about this issue.

You really can’t even see this area (the pool edge hides most of it) unless you’re IN the pool, so I don’t need a gorgeous solution - just serviceable!

thanks!

For starters, find the guys who did work on your pool last year and ask them what is best thing to do …they should have discussed it with you when they did the refinish job. Usually when a pool is re-marcited or refinished, needed tile and deck work or possible cosmetic fixes are addressed too. Good luck.

Have a 3/4 inch of dark grey colored grout from top of tile to the top edge.
What is anchoring the top edge of tile?
Shouldn’t it be grout?
Do you have the name of the sub contractor that did the tile?
You could call him out to remedy the problem but it will cost you.

We have pressure washed our coping to remove grime. When we had stains our pool guy used a chlorine tablet as his scrubber and cleaned the mortar between the tile and coping. He wore gloves.
Where you have mortar missing, you will need this to be repaired to keep pool wall stable.
Decks and pool shift causing coping to get cracks. Additionally Chlorine over time is harsh on grout and mortar and will cause crumbling. It is easy to get more mortar and fill missing spots. We have not applied an overlay without pressure washing as stains/molds can bleed through this medium.
Good luck.

The pool was there when we bought the house so no idea of the original subcontractor. The replastering guys specifically SAID they wouldn’t touch the tile which seemed ok, but I didn’t realize that gap at the top wasn’t included.

thanks - I will take a picture to the pool store I guess.
