Coming off a regional win in the Illinois state high school girls’ basketball tournament, Woodstock [high school] players were fired up.
So much so that they placed a Barbie doll on a crucifix in rival Marian Central Catholic’s gym, and posed for a picture — pointing at the “crucified” Barbie and smiling.
What dopes, including the players! The Tennessee case of high school players (the girls team) deliberately throwing the game and now this. How have we become such poor sports lately in this country? Should we blame Nike and ESPN?
I think the coach is the biggest dope of all. Teenagers quite commonly do impulsive things that are inadvisable. That is what adults are for - to offer some guidance. To me this all falls on the coach. Cannot imagine that he/she would not have stepped in and said " you know this might not be such a good idea."
One would think so but my experience is that some people’s idea of a “joke” can be quite liberal. In one of my children’s private school, on a dare a classmate threw a handful of skittles at a teacher during a lecture. Predictably the teacher asked him to leave the classroom and later demanded an apology. The boy insisted it was a “joke” and the teacher was overacting. Astonishingly his parents backed him up and it was a big “to do” at the school for a week. Thankfully the school held their ground and the boy begrudgingly wrote an apology note.
^^ That’s ridiculous-what is wrong with those parents…speaking of which I’d be interested in knowing whether any player’s parents were around when that picture was taken- it was after a game so there may have been or maybe one of them took the photo. Poor taste.

Oh good heavens! What parent would think that is an appropriate “joke” to play on a teacher during class-time. If it were “okay” then every day some student could throw something at a teacher. Where are these people’s logic???
Obviously it was a dumb thing to do, but it isn’t worth making into the latest Internet scandal-of-the moment. I think that a lot of these stupid behaviors should be confined to the parties involved. Let them apologize and be done with it. Ye Gods.
From the looks of it, the kids thought of it as being on the same level as a mascot prank. Just educate them that it really isn’t the same, and be done with it.
