Streaming Services - NewChoices

@nordicdad that’s something I was apparently unable to find. CNBC used to offer streaming at $60 a month same as our cable. Then the only offer was IF you have cable then you can stream outside home. The Hulu and YouTube I never saw offered before. Unfortunately it would be about slightly less than we pay now, as we get a discount for the internet when we have both. I know, we live in a rural area.

Driving home from a meeting this evening, I caught a bit of a piece on NPR talking about some of the new and old streaming platforms. One thing that was mentioned was that Disney+ has commercials and a lot of their programming is targeting children. They still charge a monthly fee. Contrast that with most of the other subscription based streaming platforms that do not have commercials.

@rockymtnhigh. Cnbc is on Hulu Live. Just asked for it on my firestick remote. Then switched to the Browns football game but have to check into the Chicago Bulls game between watching the Michigan State basketball game…got it… Lol…

CNBC is also available on Sling Blue + News Extra for $30/mo ($20 for first month).
We have Netflix and Amazon Prime, which is enough for us, but we also get a free year of Apple TV+ because S bought a new iPhone, and we get a free year of Disney+ because D is a Verizon customer, and for now, we can all share. We got rid of Dish six months ago and got an antenna and are saving a lot each month!

As an aside. If you can deal with just listening to cnbc for like news shows. You can get it free on Tunein app for your phone, computer etc. I listen to CNN on my phone to Bluetooth to car for free… On my way to work… FYI

Yea, CNBC and CNN are why we pay $30 a month for Sling. We watch maybe 20 min of either in the morning while eating breakfast, but Mr. had to have that. What are you people doing with all of those multiple subscriptions??? There are only 24 hours in a day, and for me, that’s 24 hours better spent elsewhere than staring at a TV screen. I am genuinely curious - how do you find the time to watch anything regularly ?! To me, TV shows died with the last episodes of ER and Medium… those were great shows.

We just subscribed to Disney+ mainly because hubby and son wanted to watch the series The Mandalorian (pretty good ;)), part of the Star Wars universe. Son is also a big Marvel fan, so I guess we’ll try it for a while.

Does anyone know if the hulu that comes with the Disney package is the hulu with or without ads? If its without, I might switch over because the bundle is close in price.

@fendergirl it’s with ads. You can create a hulu account first though and if you bundle after you order the hulu you want, you get a 6.99 credit each month. Just a warning though - ESPN+ is pretty useless IMO. I’d definitely look into it before switching to the bundle.

I have hulu live (without commercials), netflix, amazon (which I really don’t care for but it’s free with prime), and now disney+. Hulu Live is probably the first I’ll get rid of when I find a cheaper service for the like 4 channels I watch.

I bought the Disney+ deal when it was on preorder for like $140 for 3 years. Considering I’ve paid well over $100 for Star Wars films that will now be on Disney+, it’s a good investment for me lol - at least for the time being.

I’ve been watching Disney+ for a few days now and have not seen any commercials so I’m not sure what that’s about.

There are some really nice things about Disney+ that other streaming services don’t have - stream on any 4 devices anywhere simultaneously, up to 7 different profiles can be created, unlimited downloads so that you can watch offline, etc. My SILs and sister are all using my account to download some of my niblings’ favorites.

It’ll probably really come in handy when Romani Jr comes along.

From what I can see, it’s really marketed towards those of us who grew up with the Disney channel original movies and series (in the 90s - present). It has plenty of things for little kids and some of the older, classic Disney films but the vast bulk of it is stuff created in the last 20-30 years. Fans of Avengers would also find it useful since it’s a hell of a lot cheaper to get Disney+ than all of the Avengers movies and shows. (Same for Star Wars - my father is very much enjoying the new 4K UHD versions of the original trilogy).

It is all becoming what we all cut the cord for LOL, overpriced, advert strewn and nickel and dimed to death for extra and premiums. Wait until they really start making these serve a one physical address situation. Then we will know the wild west days are over.

^ It’ll be interesting to see if and when that will happen. Given the direction technology and media is going, not anytime soon in my opinion.

And I’m certainly not crying any tears for cable who is the big loser here and who deserves it given their pricing practices over the years. Bye, Felicia.

Correction to my earlier comment re:ads on Disney+: jumping into a program midstream, it looks like I lost some context. I’ve been reading online and see no reference to commercials on Disney+ other than a reference to some commercials re: Starz due to a contract between Starz and Disney. Sounds really minimal/no big deal.

Thanks, @romanigypsyeyes . We have the hulu withnot the ads and Netflix and prime. I agree, wouldn’t watch the espn.

Wait… Disney+ is free if you have Verizon?! Like wireless, or FIOS??

Looks like either depending on your service level.

ESPN+ is awesome for me. It has most of the out-of-market MLS games, English lower leagues, English cups and lower level US leagues as well.

We have Netflix, HBO, Showtime, and get Starz for free, and had Hulu for free for a few months. I watch almost no “live” TV. I just can’t stand commercials. Even PBS with their endless Viking commercials drive me mad.

@BunsenBurner - we mainly watch while exercising, and there are 5 people involved. Two of my D’s have Amazon Prime but I haven’t watched it since I ditched Amazon. Maybe I’ll get to it if I ever run out of other things to watch, lol.

Well as if on cue, I got an email that Hulu live is going up $10 a month starting next month. They just had a price increase about three months ago.

Time to start looking elsewhere. I literally just want history, MSNBC, and sports channels. Sigh

I have hulu live tv and also got the email. Maybe I will do Sling TV in the winter and YouTube during baseball season. My husband has to watch just about every game.

Just got the email also. Agh! Have to see what the options are now. Need sports.
