street smart

I know I sound like a huge idiot…but…I’ve heard so much about the importance of being “street smart” when you go to school in a big city but what exactly is that, is it just regular common sense?
lol sorry…

Street smart means to know the difference between a 9 and fo’ five, to know when to ghost when the 5-0 show up, to know where to get the wheezie fah sheezie, and how to **** a *** when she ***** you.

^^You sound like an idiot. I hope you were joking.

Being street smart is having common sense. It’s equally as important as being book smart. That’s great you know the ideas encompassing Plato’s Republic but do you know when someone is trying to scam you?

It’s basic survival. Are you one of those people who will jump in a stranger’s car in the pouring rain because they’ve offered to give you a ride? If you say yes, you probably lack street smarts.

It’s a balance between thinking with your heart and acting decisively with your brain. Don’t be naive.

hu·mor [hyoo-mer or, often, yoo-]

a comic, absurd, or incongruous quality causing amusement: the humor of a situation.

the faculty of perceiving what is amusing or comical: He is completely without humor.

an instance of being or attempting to be comical or amusing; something humorous: The humor in his joke eluded the audience.

Where was it in your previous statement?

omg lollybo i started cracking up when i read that!
thanks for the help guys, sorry my question was so stupid ;)

^^Nah, your question wasn’t stupid. Better to ask online than bring it up in real life.

I go to school in a very high crime area.
Don’t walk alone at night
If you are walking around, do so in a group of 4+
Don’t walk through the hood
Don’t be stupid…understand that there is potential danger in certain areas, and adjust to that.
Don’t ride public transportation alone at night.

^^^tiff has good advice.

There’s book smarts, common sense, and sense of humor. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people (especially on the internet) who lack the third one. I for one, enjoyed your post very much.

It’s often said that smart people lack common sense (also known as street smarts)…

don’t have an ego. If you’re going to a school in an urban city/area, don’t think that somehow just because you view the world a certain way, other people view the world the same way, or that your view is right.

usually fights/arguments happen because of misunderstandings, and when you can be the bigger person and just walk away from a situation without giving attitude or trying to be right at all times, then you shouldn’t be in trouble.

When that little kid in the street throws something at you or talks **** at you let him go because you don’t wanna deal with 20 family members trying to pick a fight with you.

thanks…
anyone know anything specific on Tallahassee? The part of it where FSU is?

Street smarts is just another way of describing common sense. They are the things you learn empirically by basically getting out there and doing things, which is why people who don’t get out much tend to lack “common sense.” If you spend all your time in your room studying, you are going to be hindered when it comes to dealing with personal interaction and surviving on the street.

I go to Penn, which is part of Philadelphia. Most students here know that it’s safer to walk in groups, where the bigger the better. Know which streets are not as safe (i.e., a lot of students have a general rule of thumb here of not venturing too far past 45th street, especially at night). Also, don’t keep too much cash on you in the event that something goes wrong (losing a few hundred is not fun. I had a friend that lost his wallet and ended up getting it back later that night, but $300 lighter).

Don’t cave in to beggars, and don’t respond to anything hostile. If someone’s trying to follow you, the best thing to do is to go somewhere public that requires money or where there are many people present. The last thing you want is to be stuck alone somewhere at night, far away from help. Don’t venture off too far. If you’re unsure, take a cab. Make sure that area has cabs that go BACK as well.

If, in the unlucky event someone threatens hostility and demands your money/etc, give it to them (also why it’s a good idea to not carry too much cash on you). It’s not worth risking your life if they’re crazy enough to pull something that stupid.

Generally, in a city, don’t mess with anyone else and they won’t mess with you. Everyone more or less keeps to themselves. As liek0806 said, miscommunication is huge. Don’t assume anything, and keep aware of what’s going on around you. The idea is not to escalate situations, since crazy city people can be pretty loose cannons with no inhibitions. If you find yourself in an argument, just back off.

It’s all really easy stuff, to be honest, as it’s “COMMON SENSE,” but if you haven’t been in the environment to learn these things, you may not see them as intuitive.
