Stressful quandry

The irony in my situation is based on his first semester and initial engineering interest, my son is doing an internship this summer that is definitely more related to civil/mechanical engineering than it is to math . . .and liking it a lot. But I have always thought he would thrive more in the workplace than in academia so I don’t think he necessarily is making a poor choice not to pursue engineering academically.

Jsrcmom, I really don’t think there is much harm in starting off in engineering as it is easy to switch out, but very hard to transfer in. We are super happy with the LAC, and I really hope your son finds the same happiness. I think what I learned as a parent is that it was important to step back and let him make the college choice, obviously within financially feasible parameters. He loved LACs right from the get go, and I think we wasted some time with looking at larger Universities that really were not fits. Best of luck to your son next year!! I hope he really likes engineering, but if not math seems very employable . . .in fact math and actuary and statistics careers all made the Wall Street Journal’s top ten career paths along with some engineering choices. It is so natural to worry!!

Hi Massmom! I am no longer in this quandary, but thank you for chiming in! I was just updating everyone on the outcome for my son. As you intuited, engineering wasn’t the right path. He was very turned on by statistics and is pursuing that with much more enthusiasm. In high school he had one amazing chemistry teacher which I think made him get fixated on chem E. But he hates studying physics so engineering really wasn’t the optimal course of study I don’t think. At any rate, it all worked out!!!

Thanks for the positive thoughts. We definitely let him make the choice and are crossing our fingers that engineering is a good fit.

amarylandmom, I’m not sure how I missed this thread the first time around but am so happy to read the update on your son. As you may recall from our pm conversation, my D is an engineer at Bucknell and loves it. It may be pricey but I think Bucknell is a gem of a school! How wonderful that your son has found the right major for himself!

Thanks so much, collage1! I definitely remember, and I was grateful then for the reassurances. Happily it really seems to have all worked out. He is really as happy as I have ever seen him. The fit was just right.
