Striking Grades from Former Major from GPA?

This is something I heard about on another forum. It can be possible to strike grades from an unrelated major if you switch to a new major. Of course you lose those credits in the process.

My girlfriend chose the wrong major when entering college. She took CS because she wanted a high paying job, even though she’s mediocre at math and disinterested in technical details. It took a huge toll on her GPA.

Her writing, humanities, etc classes were almost entirely As. But her core CS classes were Cs and Ds. Calculus I was the only CS related class she got through with a B(though it’s obviously in the general education division). She has since switched to social work and is again mostly getting As. But her overall GPA is still not that good. It’s around 2.7, because of all those CS classes that are now totally useless to her.

Is there any way to just strike those off? She’d probably qualify for more merit money than the cost of the credit hours, and I’m afraid it’s going to hurt her job prospects.

I’ve never heard of having classes removed retroactively from someone’s GPA just because they weren’t part of their major, and I don’t know if it is possible. I do know that for grad school, on resumes, etc, it is possible to list a major GPA, which would encompass only the classes from her major. It wouldn’t help for programs or aid that has strict cutoffs for cumulative GPA, but it’s an option if her major GPA is significantly higher than her cumulative GPA.

Depending on the school; there’s something called Academic Renewal. It deletes the grade and it no longer shows on your transcript. It’s like you never took the class.

Sorry, you can’t change history, Orwell notwithstanding.

Never heard of it. Seriously doubt you can strike grades like that.

Sorry, you can’t change the past. If that were true everyone, everyone would graduate with honors lol

Thank you for this!
It sounds like the [general rule](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/632741-what-academic-renewal.html) for AR is that two years have passed and it only applies to Ds and Fs. I think she had three Ds. Even without fixing the Cs, I think that would get her over a 3.0!

The way the guy on city data explained it, they can remove credits in one major, if it is totally unrelated to your current major. I’m guessing general course credits cannot be removed. So for instance, her Calculus class could not be removed. But her Java programming class could be.
I don’t know what this system is called or if it is present at many schools. His exact quote was

No problem! If someone would’ve reminded me about AR I would’ve done it with my previous major also.

Check around on your school website to see what they’re requirements for Academic Renewal are. I know for my school it seems complicated. Do you guys go to a CC? If so it should be easier to do AR there.
