strong academics, weak ec

<p>Hey all, chance me please! I’m a high school senior from a relatively wealthy area and relatively competitive school (although it’s more humanities oriented).</p>

<p>Objective Stats:
-(sat1) 770 reading 690 math 750 writing (only took one time if that matters)
-(sat2) 780 US history 790 biology 800 world history
-UWGPA: 4.0
-WGPA: 4.88
-AP: 5world history 5UShistory 5biology 5compsci 5calcBC (5calcAB subscore)
-next year’s classes: APchem, APlit, APecon/APgov, APchinese, Hphysics, calc3 at local community college if i can get in (still in the midst of applying)</p>

<p>Subjective Stats:
*extracurricular
-cross country (9-10-11, not going to do 12) (never made varsity, not much of an athlete)

-member of key club (10-11)

<p>Other:
-ethnicity: chinese
-state: california
-gender: male
-income bracket: (if combined mother/father) >$100,000
-hooks: few to none</p>

<p>basically strong academics and poor extracurriculars =/. i plan on majoring in computer engineering, but i’m still not sure if i will state this or if i will apply undeclared.</p>

<p>schools:
harvard (mostly for the lols), cornell, UCLA, UC berkeley, UC san diego, USC, duke, UC irvine, UC davis, UC riverside.</p>

<p>Harvard - High Reach (Your scores are on par or above the 50th percentile but your extracurricular’s are a tad weak)
Cornell - Reach (Same as Harvard)
UCLA - Low Reach/High Match
UC Berkeley - Low Reach
UC San Diego - High Match
USC - Low Reach/High Match
Duke - Reach
UC Irvine - Match/Possible Safety
UC Davis - Match/Possible Safety
UC Riverside - Safety</p>

<p>Your scores, GPA, and academic rigor alone will get you into most of your desired schools but your extracurricular’s, while you have many of them, are suspicious. Good luck with your college process. :)</p>

<p>Computer engineering with a low SAT math score? Yeah, you’re going to have some problems. Why not humanities? You seem to excel there. I mean, I’m just confused by the 5 on AP Calc and the 690 on SAT math. I SUCK at Math and I even got a 690 on the SAT math section!!</p>

<p>Harvard - rejection, save your money. Asian, weak SAT, weak ECs. Focus elsewhere.
Cornell - possible acceptance, but the weak ECs may prove deadly
UCLA - possible admittance, they only care about numbers. Math SAT will kill you, though.
Cal - rejection
UCSD - possible admittance
USC - rejection/spring admit. They don’t like people who are all numbers.
Duke - likely rejection
UCI - acceptance
UCD - acceptance
UCR - acceptance</p>

<p>Look at:</p>

<p>University of Washington
UT Austin
Harvey Mudd (likely reach)
UCSC</p>

<p>Harvard - Super High Reach
Cornell - Reach
UCLA - High Target
Cal - High Reach
UCSD - High Target
USC - Mid/ High Target
Duke - Low Reach
UCI - Target
UCD - Target
UCR - Low Target</p>

<p>I’d look at:
Colgate
Carnegie Mellon
Lehigh</p>

<p>Good luck!!</p>

<p>Zelda, I’m more of a big picture guy. I like the humanities, but I feel more driven in mathematics classes, and Computer Science is by far the most interesting class I’ve ever taken. I scored low on SAT math1 because I’m much more poor at checking my work; based off of my practice tests, whether or not I do well on SAT math1 is more luck than myself (I’ve scored from 690’s to 800’s). I never retook because I felt 690 was good enough. </p>

<p>Taking sat2 math might have been a good idea, but I’d heard the curve is so high, even a few mistakes is enough to bring you down, and my greatest weakness has always been silly mistakes. </p>

<p>and thanks all!</p>

<p>But for a math/science related field and hoping to get into a top 50 school, a 690 Math SAT isn’t good enough :(</p>

<p>I think you would be a strong candidate for all the UCs (they are more numbers focused), Harvard i dont think you have a chance, Duke i have no idea sorry and USC possibly (because they like seeing ECs too).</p>
