Strong university, Weak (but improving) GPA.

My current GPA is 2.6

I’m planning on applying to Columbia College Chicago to study English there. I’m told my GPA is enough to get me in, despite it’s weak numbers.
I currently have 45 credits (i’m in a North VA CC). I’m sending out applications for the spring semester and i’m also going to test my luck with Cornell and Syracuse, even though i probably wont get in.
I have two letters of recommendation and strong SAT results (even though that probably wont matter). I dont have any extra circulars as my current CC doesn’t have anything of that sort. I also cant work as i’m currently an international student.

My grade’s have improved these last two semesters but they’re still C’s and B’s. I KNOW i’m good enough for a top tier school but i just need a school that’ll push me instead of throwing teachers who dont give a damn.

I need 2 things:

1) A list of really good schools that i could get into (with or without insane luck)

2) What i can do to improve my resume (deadline’s in November)

Please help without giving advice about what i shouldn’t do.

Very expensive, $684/credit hour.
Can you afford the tuition, books, and living costs?
Has to be something more affordable in VA.

Money’s out of the question. I’m able to afford any university costs, easily.

The wife of a friend, an international, went to ND State for English. I can’t find their CDS to see how your grades fit.

Since money is no object, then you need to apply to a variety of schools with good English programs.

Cornell is not likely…neither is Syracuse.

You will find more serious-minded students and profs at many 4 year universities. CCs sometimes have kids who really don’t have any real direction. Altho that’s not always the case.

Why Columbia College in Chicago? Is it known for English?

What is your career goal?

What else do you want in a school? Quiet campus? Spirited rah rah campus? Warm weather? Cold/snowy weather? (Chicago can be freezing!)

I want a challenging school that’s in an urban environment. The colder the better but preferably a city that i can walk down the street in, rather than drive everywhere (New york, chicago, Seattle…etc)
Columbia College Chicago has a pretty decent english program but i’m going based on it’s low GPA acceptance rate.

Any other suggestions ?

St. Louis U might accept you. So might Marquette or Creighton.

yeah, i’m really going to tell you to not even bother with cornell or syracuse. you could try a CUNY school. queens is supposed to have a decent english department

2.6 GPA at a CC hurts. Apply to tier 2 private schools without applying for financial aid. They will guarantee you many acceptances.

You’re not going to get into Cornell. They accept very few transfer students and the ones they do take have pretty much perfect GPAs/very high SATs. The CUNY idea, however, is an excellent one. There are some world-renowned faculty there. Temple, in Philadelphia, might also be a possibility. In Chicago, Loyola and UI have reputable English Departments; I don’t know enough about their admissions criteria to know if you have a good shot there.

^^^

Same with many public flagships that are ranked about 75 - 130. They will take you if you apply early.

Pick the ones that are strong in humanities.

What area of English? Creative writing? Literature?

Literature

I’m looking at either Chicago, New York or Seattle for uni’s. Anything else is out of the question.

Try U Seattle, Loyola Chicago, and the Sunys.

Why those 3 cities?

^ Yes, why those three cities??

I miss living in the city.

And do you think those are the only cities in the US???

look at this list if you havent already

[Guaranteed Admissions :: Northern Virginia Community College](http://www.nvcc.edu/about-nova/directories--offices/administrative-offices/academic/guaranteed-adm/index.html)

Though most are not where you want.

ODU will take you, it looks like. And Norfolk is a city, sort of.

Also VCU, which is in the heart of Richmond, more or less.
