Structure of "Share with a us a few of your favorite" essay

Does anyone have any advice on how to structure this essay? Is it okay for it to be more of a conglomerate of thoughts and less a structured and focused (on one topic) essay? I’m pretty stumped on this one.

I made a list because that was my initial reaction to the word “share”

I picked my favorite thing from 3 categories and wrote a short “paragraph” on each.

My D2 wrote about two different things to share last year (she was accepted EA). She ended up with two paragraphs, one on each item. One was a book and one was an artist. Hers was really pretty straightforward, for each item she talked a little about what it was (in case they weren’t familiar to the reader) and then a few sentences describing why she likes them so much.

I wrote 2/3 of a page in paragraph form, with each paragraph generally focused on one of movies, books, music, and websites. I did it all at once, no edits, and consequently with a typo or two - yet I still was accepted EA, probably indicating that they don’t expect much from it. Because I didn’t edit thoroughly though, my voice was genuine and showed in the essay - although none of my essays sounded stiff, this one was especially informal. All simple declarative sentences, one after the other, that gave insight into what I liked and why I liked them.

My biggest question when writing this essay was whether to make it a list or prose; I figured that, although they don’t specify, writing in prose will let you elaborate on your ideas which you can’t do in a list. For example, it’s much more informative to write about why you enjoy reading the works of J.R.R Tolkien than to just list Tolkien as a favorite author, and it gives insight to the adcom on how you think, which always makes you seem more interesting.

Once I arrived on campus, I noticed my roommate shared many of my interests which I didn’t have space to mention on the housing form, so they may look at it for housing purposes once you’re accepted.

I made an eclectic list of some of my interests. The prompt specifically states that I could add my own categories, so I made sure to take advantage of that.

Thanks for the help, everyone!
