Struggling Junior in High School

Hi, I’m Heather and I’m 16 and attend school in New Jersey. My parents don’t seem to be pushing me to look into colleges, take SAT’s or even help set me up with community service. My older sister attends Brookedale, and that isn’t where I want to go. However I’m doing all this research for college on my own.

Freshman and Sophomore year I had a GPA of 3.5. This year, for first marking period I have a 4.1 and I plan on improving it slightly. I haven’t taken SAT’s yet because my parents wont sit down with me to sign up, but from the PSAT’s my scores don’t appear too great. Sophomore year I got a 1350, and this year I got a 1450. I want to take SAT classes, but also an art class. I want to attend a school with an art program for graphic arts. I have an okay portfolio, but there isn’t any drawings in there to really have it be outstanding. What are my chances of getting into Rutger’s art program or just the school in general? It’s close to home and that’s the type of place I want to go to.

I’m the Varsity gymnastics manager, Boys Varsity volleyball manager, as well as a member of TSA.

Please help, I really need some assistance. Thank you.

1) how did you get your PSAT scores back already from this October? not due back in most places until December.
2) there are free online SAT/ACT preps…you seem motivated enought that you may not have to pay for a class…also, search CC for other self-study ideas and definitely try the ACT…
3) make an appt with your guidance counselor and discuss all of this; he/she should be of some help…
4) if you are taking any art at school, your teacher may be of assistance in preparing you for your portfolio going forward…others may want to chime in on this one…

5) no idea about Rutgers, but you may want to post on that board for people who are more knowledgeable about it

I’m not sure. I wasn’t expecting them either but they were given back in homeroom.
and you think it’s a smart idea to take the sats and the acts?
And I would love to meet with my guidance counselor, but she isn’t the easiest women to talk to. She’s also messed up a lot of kids actually with their applications that it makes me nervous.

and I am taking digital media and photography for my 3rd year now. Taking it again next year along with fine arts and a film class.

is the 1450 out of 1600 or 2400?
