Stuck Between Two Schools...

Just as the title says, I’m at a standstill with two schools.

I’m located in Buffalo, NY and my two schools of choice are Daemen College in Amherst, and Hilbert College in Hamburg.

Both offer the major I’m looking for (Accounting), and both are 4 year Catholic schools. Not that I prefer Catholic, but they are both in very safe, friendly areas. Something that Buffalo doesn’t offer very much of, but that’s besides the point…

Daemen would be 75K after 4 years, and Hilbert would be 64K after 4 years. Haven’t taken my SAT’s, and Hilbert doesn’t require you do, but Daemen does.

Not sure if the difference would be enough for me to go take my SAT’s to apply to Daemen. Most people that I hear from have really enjoyed Hilbert, whilst I’ve never heard of somebody that went to Daemen.

Any help here??

Here’s the two sites of both colleges.

Thanks for reading, and looking forward to your suggestions!

Are you a junior or a senior? If you’re a senior it might be too late to worry about SATs. If you are a junior, I strongly recommend you take the SAT or ACT. Your ideas of where you want to go to school could change quite a bit before next January. By not taking one of the tests you are eliminating your ability to apply to the majority of schools. Quickly checking the Hilbert website, you find you are eliminating yourself from consideration for the President’s Scholarship. There are two accounting scholarships and it doesn’t say if ACT/SAT scores are part of the consideration for those. That would be good to find out.

I don’t think it’s too late to take them.

I’m a senior currently, and it says on CollegeBoard that there’s an SAT testing date on May 3rd, and you have to apply by April 1st for it.

I wasn’t planning on going to school in the fall, however. I was going to start in January of next year.

As for the scholarship, I don’t think I would apply. My GPA isn’t too good (my average has hovered around an 80-82). I am kind of leaning towards Hilbert, though, since my Mom knows someone who went there for Accounting, and has a high-paying accounting job right out of college.

Also check out [Economic Diversity of Colleges](economicdiversity.org) and [Economic Diversity of Colleges](economicdiversity.org) to compare average levels of student debt upon graduation.

I think you would have to contact the school’s admissions office to find out for sure the latest test date they will consider given your planned enrollment date. If you are okay datewise, I really, really think you should take that SAT. Even if you prefer the school not requiring it, you want to get accepted to more than one school. That way if the preferred school gives you a poorer financial aid package, you have more leverage. “School A says based upon our financial situation we would have to pay $X. In light of that could you please take a second look at that aid package?” Newsweek had an article talking about some student who applied to only one school and found out it was a real mistake due to the inability to negotiate financial aid.
