Student accommodations payment question

When should you choose your accommodations if you plan on living in Uni accommodations? When do you have to pay? Do you need to commit to the Uni first? Asking for my American daughter, likely the University of Southampton. Any info would be helpful since we are new to this. Thanks.

Ask the school - all schools are different. Some you apply and make a deposit before you are accepted into the school.

So best to have the college answer your question.

You need to check each uni website. They will all have their own policies. Here’s Southampton

Although you will register for housing when you accept the offer, probably in the spring (as firm or insurance if through UCAS), UK universities do literally nothing until A level results come out in mid-August because almost all domestic offers are conditional on those results. So you won’t know until very late what is happening (fortunately most will guarantee resident hall accommodation for freshmen).

Make sure you do your visa application as early as possible, as soon as your offer is unconditional (if dependent on AP tests make sure those are sent direct to the university or you may have significant delays). Our neighbors’ kid missed his freshman intro week because his visa was delayed.

Thanks. She’s a citizen so luckily doesn’t need to do a visa. Thanks for the other info.

That’s so helpful. (The UK student visa applications are atrociously detailed and take forever to complete.)
