Student arrested for making ricin in dorm.

<a href=“Georgetown student arrested after making ricin in dorm”>http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/22/georgetown-ricin-milzman/6732275/</a></p>

The ultimate bad dorm mate. He probably could have killed many students.

"…allegedly showed off a bag of homemade ricin to his dorm adviser, who notified school authorities"

^^Although he might have some pretty good experimental skills (did not kill himself off accidentally) , he is definitely not the sharpest shovel in the shed.

High admissions standards can’t weed out stupid.

Things I Did Over Spring Break

I’m aware of stories of kids making recreational drugs in their dorm rooms, including at Georgetown a few years ago: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/23/AR2010102302423.html</a> But not poison! Maybe the guy had a Walter White fixation. Whatever Georgetown and the District decide will happen to Daniel, I hope that someone will be keeping on eye on him in the future.

Maybe just a bad seed who was bright enough to be admitted to Georgetown. Stupid is not a word that comes to mind.

Dear Diary,

Today I made a supertoxic biological weapon in my dorm room.

Gotta love the Walter White reference!

My daughter took a summer geology class at a local community college with someone that had attempted to make some kind of drugs ( crack/meth?) in his microwave at Reed.
Possibly why they havent allowed students to have microwaves in their dorm rooms since!

I have to agree that he is some kind of stupid. Book smart doesn’t help you when you are trying to decide whether to show off your homemade poison to your dorm advisor.

Friends say “he has a good conscience” and his father works at Georgetown. Holy moly.

Wow… I am pretty sure people with a “good conscience” don’t set out to make ricin to start with…

Here’s the campus paper version.

<a href=“Sophomore Charged in Ricin Case”>http://www.thehoya.com/sophomore-charged-in-ricin-case/</a></p>

Looks like he was targeting a specific student. IMO, the RA who made that statement should be fired immediately.

Ugh! 19 years old and he has already ruined his college career. He did such a stupid thing and yet it could have such long lasting consequences.

Dunno–if the RA didn’t disclose that Milzman said he was going to use the poison on another student and somehow he later harmed that (or even possibly another) student, the RA would be at fault for not sharing this knowledge when he learned of it, like he is now.

Yes, I feel for this kid, but things could have been a LOT worse if the Ricin was allowed to harm people–scary stuff!

I believe ‘ice’ or methamphetamine, which is also pretty toxic can be made in cars, dorm rooms or many other places. Scary that this kid did it and was only caught because he talked about.

Forget ruining his “college career” - the kid could have a federal felony conviction and a long prison sentence. He’s pretty much ruined any career he was planning. Obviously the kid was smart enough to know that what he was doing was illegal and potentially deadly. I don’t really have a lot of sympathy. I will be curious to see what kind of defence his rich parents put up.

^^The student was a victim of “affluenza”. His rich parents will get him into counseling.

And why didn’t his friends, who knew he was making ricin, tell someone in a position of authority???

nxiousmom, It is amazing what kids can do that they define as a “prank.” I would expect that his friends probably didn’t really believe it. I think it is pretty clear that if it had crossed his mind to harm someone he was asking to be “stopped” given that he told friends and the RA.
