Student Athletes?

So I’m a student athlete hopefully to be accepted to the Penn State Class of '17! My GPA is 4.0 and I will graduate with 38 credits. My lowest percentage score of a highschool class from 9th-12th grade was 97%. My SAT’s are horrible though (had to take it with a week notice and didn’t study.) And I’m not a good time tester. At all. Let alone a test with subjects and format I’m not familiar with. How bad do SAt hurt student athletes though? I heard SATs don’t matter as much as GPA and how good you are at your sport. So if you in the top 12 in the nation in your sport, how good is your chance? Thanks! :D

Student athletes have to gain admittance through the same door as everybody else. GPA and test scores are PSU’s primary evaluative tools, so you may still be okay. On the plus side, if you are recruited as an athlete and do get in as a student, PSU has lots so academic support in place for student-athletes. that’s why it has one of the highest student athlete graduation rates and GPA. But you don’t get special admittance rules , no matter what you’ve heard.

What is your SAT score?

You have 4.0 GPA so the lowest SAT score you can have to get into main campus is 1700 according to the chart. If you have over 1700, there is nothing to worry about. Are you taking any AP’s ? A 4.00 GPA with AP is more valued than 4.00 without any AP…

Please, don’t kid yourself. If a school REALLY wants you there for a sport, they’ll find a way to get you in.

I have to side with ETuck on this one…

The first hurdle for any student athlete is registering for the NCAA Clearinghouse. They will determine, based on a composite of your GPA and SAT scores if you are eligible to compete in college.

Then, contact the coach BEFORE you apply! Each school has specific standards that they like to adhere to for student athletes, but they aren’t the same as the rest of the student body. Also, atleast when I applied (in 2002, before online apps) the coach sent me an application with a big red A stamped on it, which I then sent to admissions.

Also, which sport?

My SAT scores arnt very good at all  1200. Waiting for my updated results in 5 days. But worst comes to worst I know I have this 1200. I’m just hoping they understand the SAT is the only academic thing I haven’t mastered. I have talked with the coach and I have 2 national coaches writing letters of recommendation.

I think 1200 is a very good score…you are around the 50th percentile at Penn State…So, if you get like 1300 on the January SAT, you are definitely in like 100% in…anyway keep this thread updated

Wait now that I think about it, is that 1200 CR+M+W or just CR+M…If its the total of all sections, I hope you can bump that up to at least 1550…The 25th percentile at Penn State is 1620…

You will be fine if that is a 1200/1600. I’ve never heard of anyone getting a 1200/2400

It’s out of all 3  which makes me look like an idiot but in not. My grades show the opposite. It’s just the timed testing thing freaks me out. I scored that but still got 10/12 on my essay. So I’m not sure how I atleast got a little bit higher. Is there anything you recommend I do Incase these new scores don’t turn up that much higher so I can still have a solid application?

And I’m in the process of the clearing house process. My transcripts GPA/ and SAT scores are qualifying. Just waiting on them to review my core courses

Oh but no APs. But I did do an advance summer session program where I did a whole school year over last summer for 10th grade to graduate early

Have you tried the ACT? Some find it easier than the SAT. And hope your updated scores are better. Good luck.

The best thing you can do is stay in contact with you’re (future) coach. Depending on you’re sport the coach may have some pull. I was on the Fencing team from 2002 - 2006, and the coach has been there for over 30 years, won a bunch of championships, so the admissions office will listen if he needs to go to bat for someone. So just talk to the coach of you’re sport and they should be able to help you out. The 4.0 GPA is also a very good thing. PSU Admissions weights that much heavier than you’re SAT or ACT score.
