Student Bill & Financial Aid?

So I have an insurance that covers school bills as well as daycare bills for my son for the next 4 years. It is from my husband’s life insurance. I am currently getting more financial aid then the school costs since I am visiting a community college. So I get refund checks every semester as well. Now my question is can I get financial aid and have the insurance pay for the bills? The financial aid is mentioned on the bill so I am not sure what my rights are. I am guessing that financial aid will not be covering all the costs once I transfer to a university next year so I can then take advantage of the insurance money but I was wondering if I can use it now as well.

Is this an actual life insurance policy? Did your husband die and they have funds available to you which are paid only for certain items?

Yes, my husband passed recently and I just found out that the insurance also covers my school bills for the next 4 years.

Was it a lump sum which he has being administered by a trustee? If so, then whatever money is there should all be yours eventually, thus there would be no advantage in seeking funds early in a convoluted manner.

Or is it that you get extra money for education?

It’s Family Benefits Package: Provides career adjustment, child care and higher education benefits to eligible family members of insured employees who die as a result of an accident. I am not sure what the difference is.

I am a 26 full-time student with a little 2 year old to care for on my own so I am trying to get every help I can financially.

This is what it says:

Career Adjustment Benefit For Spouse/Domestic Partner
Your surviving spouse/domestic partner may need to make a career adjustment as a result
of your accidental death. When this requires additional training, the Career Adjustment
Benefit may help make this transition easier. The amount payable is the amount of the
spouse/domestic partner’s tuition expenses for retraining (excluding board and room,
books, fees, supplies and other expenses) up to $5,000 per year for three years after the
date of your death (not to exceed a cumulative total of $10,000 or 25 percent of your
Optional AD&D amount, whichever is less).
This benefit will be paid in addition to any other AD&D insurance benefit payable for
the same accident. If you have no surviving spouse/domestic partner, this benefit will not
be paid.

Now does that mean since I was going to College while my husband passed, I am not eligeble for it??

So sorry for your loss! :(. In what you’ve posted, I don’t read anything saying that you’d be ineligible due to being enrolled at the time of his death, but you may want to double check with your benefits manager in order to get all the information and procedural stuff clear.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your husband.

Since this benefit only covers tuition, you might still qualify for aid to help with room, board, and books.

If your income is low enough, you might get Pell. I don’t know how much your H earned in 2010, or how much you may have rec’d in any lump sum payments. If your H’s death was the result of a work-related accident, I hope you have consulted an attorney for a good settlement.

I.*

That could be an issue for you. How much more schooling do you need? Where does it say that it includes child care? Is the child care amount counted in the cum $10k?

“Childcare Benefit
If you die in an accident and your spouse/domestic partner incurs childcare expenses (for
children up to age 13) as a result of working or training for work or increasing earnings,
your spouse/domestic partner will be reimbursed for the cost of those childcare expenses, up
to $5,000 per year for three years after the date of your death (not to exceed a cumulative
total of $10,000 or 25 percent of your Optional AD&D amount, whichever is less).
This benefit will be paid in addition to any other AD&D insurance benefit payable for
the same accident. If you have no surviving spouse/domestic partner, this benefit will not
be paid.”

I am not working right now, only going to college. I will be done with my AA by May of 2011 and will transfer to a University right after that. My husband did not not pass because of a result of a work-related accident, it was a motorcycle accident. Why could that be an issue?
