I’m about to purchase Microsoft Office Office 2010 Home & Student version for $115 at Amazon. It includes 3 installations.

I’m trying to figure out if I could get a better deal through student discount offers, but it’s unclear that I could. Checking around, I’ve seen deals for the Pro Office version for around $70-90, with what appears to be only one installation. Since we don’t need the extra programs that come with Pro (Outlook, Publisher, Access & maybe some others), this doesn’t seem to be a better deal for us. Also, we need at least 3 installations.

I have one child in college (he already has Office) and another in middle school. I’m wondering if the Amazon deal is the best value for us.

Look at www dot academicsuperstore dot com . Depending on the product your student may have to purchase it and/or provide proof of their academic status. They should also check their bookstore and see if there are student discounts there. Another place to check for good prices on software is www dot newegg dot com .

I got the $70-$90 deal for my son for Microsoft Office Ultimate for about $80 in 2008. It’s on his older MacBook Pro. He current MacBook Pro just has Oracle Open Office (freeware) and he just uses that. I have Oracle Open Office on all of my systems and it gets the job done for us. Daughter also uses Oracle Open Office.

Microsoft Ultimate Office does have a very nice application for students: OneNote. It’s pretty good for professional use too. It can be purchased on its own too.

I think that you would be better off with the Home and Student version if you don’t need the added bells and whistles in Ultimate.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It probably wasn’t too clear in my OP, but my college kid already has Office on his PC, so I am buying the software for three of us at home. Those student discount offers, if I understand correctly, are good for only one installation. So, although they are heavily discounted, it would cost us 3 x $80 = $240. OTOH, the Amazon price would be $115 for 3 installations.

The freeware is also an option I should consider, but for someone like me it would probably require of a time commitment than I want to make right now. (Whenever I’m doing something new on the computer, it takes me way more time than it does the average person.)

The Ultimate Steal is a single license but can be installed on multiple computers. My daughter bought it and we have it installed on her laptop and desktop.

Just read this on a message board: The download version is good for 1 person on 2 computers (ie you can install it on 2 computers but can’t use both at the same time) or there is the Disk version (costs $30 more) and its good for 3 computers in one household like 2007 was.

I didn’t know that. I will try to dig out the email or the download so that I can install it on son’s newer computer. I don’t know if he still wants to use it as he’s been using Oracle Open Office since last summer with no complaints.
