Student from the American University of Paris (AUP) here to answer questions

are you going to be in belize?

Switzerland is not in the EU.

Will they accept someone who has not taken any a.p classes or honors? I go to a catholic school and we have to take tests to get in to the top classes. I couldn’t get into any of them. I do a lot of extracurricular activities and have a good gpa. Do I have a chance in that school.

You’re right. But Swiss citizens will have an easier time with residency and work permits in France than Americans.

Ether 91,

I can’t predict with certainty anyone’s admission. All I can say to anyone wanting to apply is try to do their best with the classes they have. Try not to stress too much over college admissions and enjoy high school. Challenge yourself, but don’t let the end-all be what school you get into. You will get in somewhere that you will like.

this thread has answered so many of my questions, but i had just a few more…

first, and this is going to sound irrelevant, but does AUP still have that ‘college’ feel, even with off-campus housing? I mean, does it still feel like a community, opposed to a building where you just come at certain times of the day to take classes?
second, could I be able to support myself when it comes to food and rent with a part time job after classes? what’s the average wage in paris when it comes to basic jobs like waitressing or bartending? it’s just that my family would already be supporting most of my tuition, so I would just like to be able to take care of my self outside of the university. is this possible with a part time job? (I know the government offers rent reduction for students, which helps quite a bit.)
also, I haven’t applied yet, but I’m incredibly nervous about doing so, since I’ll be crushed if I don’t get accepted. Up until junior year, my grades were a disaster- pretty embarrassing, actually. Junior year, however, I got serious and have maintained about a 3.8 gpa (unweighed) with good SAT scores. And I can pretty much guarantee I want this more than anybody else applying! :] Do I have a decent shot at getting in? I would be willing to even fly out to Paris for an interview.
and last of all, I was just wondering if AUP was planning to add any different majors to their curriculum within the next few years. I know you probably would have no idea about this, but I might as well inquire, right?

Wow, sorry that was so long! Any replies would be so helpful, thank you!

Thanks I really appreciated your advice

oh, i had one more question-
are the independent rooms (the old maid chambers) the housing department gives you big enough to comfortably fit a queen bed? or am I going to have to get a twin?

Don’t go to AUP merely because you want to go to Paris.

If you’re considering AUP, you need to think long and hard about what you want to do after you graduate because the school is more limited than most other US schools.

Look at the types of courses they offer, consider the types of courses they don’t offer, compare their curriculum with those at other schools, consider the size of the school, consider what living in a ‘chambre de bonne’ might be like, etc.

In response to corrine_h ,

The housing department shows you choices that fall within your price range. That can vary widely. Typically, the place already has a bed in it. The smaller ones will have a twin, the larger ones might have a double or a queen. You definitely don’t buy (or ship) your own bed unless you have a lot of money.

The “old maids chambers” to which you are referring are known as “chambres de bonne” and will include a twin size bed. It would be pretty hard to fit a queen in there, but you could, depending on the layout. Those rooms are typically 9 to 12 square meters.

Do visiting students recieve any type of financial aid or are do we have to pay 100% out-of-pocket?

ril5384,

I am from Florida too! I was just accepted to AUP, and right now, my biggest obstacle is financial aid. Do you have any suggestions? Being from a small town in Florida, I’m only assuming you had a similar problem…?

I am DYING to go to this school to study art history, and I’m trying to think of any way to make it possible.

This is a blog about it lol: [An American in Paris (hopefully…) - how it all started…](Error)

Please give me any advice you have! Thanks so much!

I am a tenth grade student in an American private school who is considering switching to an online school to finish up high school sooner. Would AUP accept a student with a diploma from an online school?

I’ve received a lot of feedback and messages about this thread but I’m sorry that I will not be able to answer any more questions. I know that there is a student run page on Facebook for future students in which there is a forum. I’d also recommend directly calling the school to answer specific questions, especially about financial aid and whatnot. The numbers can be found on their website. Best of luck and hope I could be of help.

Hey everyone,

just wanted to revive this topic in case anyone had any more questions about The American University of Paris (AUP). I work at AUP and am in charge of communicating with prospective students online so feel free to ask me (almost) anything. I am also an alumn so I know the University from both the admissions as well as the student perspective.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Best,
Sebastian

pretty sure the avg gpa for incoming students is ~2.4

Hi Sebastian,
Do you have information about the summer term at AUP? My daughter has pre-registered for her classes and we are unsure about the housing options. Are you able to give us some input? I’m not sure the FIAP is the best option for her and maybe a home-stay would be better. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hello from Paris!

I think your daughter’s choice of housing really depends on what she is looking to get out of the experience of studying in Paris for the summer.

The FIAP is a modern, clean, and safe youth center, but probably not the most immersive experience during a stay in Paris. A lot of the students staying there will be from international backgrounds. Also, your daughter would be in a double-room, something that is worth considering.

Staying in a family will be a very different experience. Your daughter would participate in their day-to-day life, share meals with them, etc. At the same time, there might be some limitations, for example that her host family would expect her to adhere to a certain ‘curfew’. This is different from family to family, but it is good to acknowledge and plan for it ahead of time.

Living with a family, even for a short-time, is a give and take and probably wouldn’t provide your daughter with the same ‘freedoms’ as living on her own would; at the same time it can lead to much greater immersion and a more authentic experience as host families provide an access to French culture and every day life that a youth center can’t.

I can’t give you a definitive answer on what option to chose. Ultimately, it depends on your daughter’s priorities and how she envisions her stay in Paris. In any case, both options provide a safe and clean environment and we ensure that our summer students do well during their stay.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Best,
Sebastian
