Student from the American University of Paris (AUP) here to answer questions

bmerteuil, me too! If I ever get an answer I’ll let you know!

Dear Aaccee,

In short, I would say that you should be find by just completing the Commonapp.
Then again, this is not really my area and I’m not working for the university, so I
can’t really provide a definite answer. I would suggest contacting the university,
through admissions@aup.edu. They really are quite keen on helping students with
questions like these.

I hope this helps,

Yours sincerely,
Daedalos

Hi ril! This thread hasn’t been updated since several months, hopefully you will see my message here.

I got accepted into the AUP and I am having one concern about the uni.

Do you have many French friends? If so, how do they do in AUP? My points is that, I read that many international students go to the AUP to improve their French, however are French students who are already proficient in French, enjoying AUP?

I am French but living outside France for the moment so I haven’t gotten the chance to visit the university.

Thanks for your help!

Hi!
Im from moravian college with 2.87 GPA, i have my french and art teacher willing to write upstanding recommendations, a great amount of volunteer work- 2 years as a volunteer at st barnabas hospital, domestic abuse advocate and sexual assault advocate, i plan on writing my college essay in french and a 22 on act test. Do you believe i could get in if i transfer spring semester or will i have to wait until fall when my grades are higher, because if i spend another semester at my college ill just be miserable. I want to apply for spring term if i have a good chance

I’ve received an email 2 days ago from the AUP admission telling me that im accepted and they will send me an acceptance package to proceed in my student Visa! They told me they will send me a digital copy (on email) as soon as possible and the original is sent to me at home. I want to know how long is it gonna take them to send me the digital one by email. I need it urgently to apply for the student visa because im supposed to travel after 40 days only. HELP

Hi,
I’m a community college student who will be transferring to a four-year college in Fall 2013.
I have very limited knowledge of French, but I would really like to learn. I learned that AUP have a summer French immersion course. I want to take it in Summer 2013. Is it any good/easy? Do they provide housing for students, or do we have to look around in Paris?

Is it easy to make friends there with both the students and Parisians you meet on the street?
Oh, and how much would it cost on the whole? I looked at the website, and it mentioned stuff about three week courses which wasn’t very clear.

Thanks.

Okay, so, I’ve been accepted for the upcoming year (fall semester 2013! woot!), and of course, as a 17 year old girl from a small town in North Carolina, my parents are extremely nervous about sending me off to Paris on my own. I (although I would at least like to believe that I can take care of myself) am extremely worried because I’ve heard that French people (especially Parisians) hate Americans. I have a problem because I don’t know French, but I’m hoping to take one of the French Immersion courses over the summer. Anything to ease the conscience?

The French do not hate Americans. However, they are proud of their culture and history and do not like to be patromized, something the US government and media often does. If you remain humble, the French will not mind your nationality, race or language of communication. Parisians are no different from the rest of the Frogs, they merely have an attitude that comes with living in a city with 10 million inhabitants. The same can be said of New Yorkers.

If you exercise common sense, avoid rough areas (like any huge city, Paris will have bad neighbourhoods) and approach your time in France as a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience, you will have an awesome time. You lucky duck!

Hello Daedalos,

I just got accepted to AUP for Fall 2013, and I am an Arab Muslim. I also got accepted to Durham University in Britain.

My wish is to go to AUP, but my mom is hesitant because I am a Muslim and I wear Hijab. She told me that I will be having a hard time in AUP cause in France they do not like Hijab.
Although I have a profound wish to go to AUP, I am scared if what mom said happened to be right.

Is Hijab going to be an issue at the university? because I really do not wish for it to be an obstacle.

Dear Samaher,

Congratulations on getting accepted! As for your question: unfortunately, although France has one of the largest Muslim populations in Europe, we find intolerance wherever we go.

At the same time, I can tell you from two years of experience that AUP is a place where people come together to study from the most different backgrounds. Diversity is what this university thrives on and I can honestly say that in my eyes, AUP is excellent in that I have never seen any form of racism, religious intolerance or cultural negativity either in the classroom or on campus.

Incidentally, you may be interested in a student club that was created a year ago, called the Muslim Student Association: http://my.aup.edu/club/muslim-student-association

I hope that helps to answer your question,
Good luck, wherever you go!

MODERATOR’S NOTE
As we do not need two threads with the same title on the same subject, I am merging them. You may continue to ask your questions of Daedolus or ril5384 as you choose.

Parisians are pretty tolerant. You will have bigots and racists everywhere, but you should have no trouble wearing the hijab at AUP or in Paris. I think Paris is a great experience for a young college student. You will have a great experience there.

If i goto AUP and hopfully get accepted, ill probably have to take a crazy debt out to attend, my question is… Is it worth it?

Hi, it’s been a while since anyone has posted on this thread, but I was just wondering if AUP was a good option for someone who wants to do pre-med, you see I love the idea of studying in France but I can’t seem to find any good American universities abroad, especially one that offers biology majors or pre-med.

Okay soooo… Im a junior in High School. And recently ive become super interested in this school. And i really wanna make it sort of my “mission” to go there. My gpa is a 3.25 but i know im gonna do a lot better the next 2 years. Anyways, I have a million questions so here goes nothing.

 1. I’m gonna be paying for college all by myself … So how is the financial aid? because i know im gonna need it.
 2. What is the cheapest id be paying for a place to live ? and are we allowed to have a room mate to make the rent cheaper?
 3. How hard is it to get in? Like say i have a 3.25 gpa and a stellar essay… What would you say my chances are?
 4. Does community service help on your application?
 5. How do yu know where to go like when you get off the plane?
 6. Is the room mate allowed to be a guy? It doesnt really seem like they’re super strict about that kind of thing but im just wondering …
 7. Would me knowing french help with me getting accepted?
 8. Will me never have been out of the country hurt my chances at getting in ? i mean its not that i didnt want to go its that i never had the money…
 9. Could you just also add any helpful advice that i could maybe use ?

Also do you think I could go there to be an english teacher? It seems like they have a great english program :)

my son (college junior) will be studying in the fall semester at AUP. We’ve started the process for a visa, he put in for housing through comforts of paris. I feel so overwhelmed–have so many questions about what to pack, what about safety, money, his travel around Europe and through Paris…Any resources? Anyone studied semester abroad have any advice? Thanks!

When my daughter did semester abroad in Budapest I didn’t have anything to do with it. She stayed in an apartment with a couple other students, the program had listings for landlords students had used in the past. She went to Prague one weekend with a couple other students. After, she traveled alone for 3 weeks, mostly using couchsurfing.com and youth hostels–friends in a couple of countries only. Went to Ukraine (train sleeper + friend), Istanbul (couchsurfing + hostel), N. Italy (friend), Berlin (hostel), Paris (couchsurfing), London.

Have your son read the study abroad section on this board. I’m sure there are some tips there for him.
