Student hoaxes world's media on Wikipedia

Here’s a story about a university student who pulled a fast one on media outlets worldwide for not checking their facts before reporting:

Just goes to show how big of a responsibility the media and journalists have to report accurate and unbiased news, yet scarily this is not always the case. Makes you wonder what else we read in the media that isn’t true. As an aspiring journalist, this reckless reporting of false information makes me feel both enraged that journalists do not know better and determined to never let this foolishness happen in my own reporting.

I loooove Wikipedia as a quick go-to for basic background information, but anything from a cite that lets anyone edit the content should be taken with a HUGE grain (more like lump) of salt.

Any thoughts?
