D doing 8 week rotation at BZ, need to find close, inexpensive housing - any suggestions?
Contact the zoo itself and ask where prior people have stayed. I grew up near there and the neighborhood can be spotty still.
Fordham’s Rose Hill campus is nearby so you might also want to check there – especially if it is over the summer.
What type of rotation? College or fellowship? Contact the zoo or the sponsor of the program directly as it is vital she be in a safe apartment.
Look at transit lines and choose residence with a convenient commuting distance. When D2 did a fellowship there, she had a 1 1/2 hour commute that required three changes from her reasonably priced apartment that was an easy commute to almost everywhere else. She even thought about bringing a car into the city, but bridge tolls were prohibitive.
That said, her experience at Bronx Zoo was very positive, and having it on the resume seems to have opened some doors for her.
Have you looked into the 92nd St. Y? Depending upon which entrance she would be required to enter the zoo, she could take the 4 or 5 train.
Sorry, hit post and never finished my comment! Your daughter’s best bet would be 4 train to Fordham, transfer to an express bus, Bx12 select bus, (my son said this a safe transfer and a 1 stop bus), it would drop her off at the Fordham entrance to the zoo.
What general location did she stay in?
It’s a website intended for medical students doing electives at other medical schools but there isn’t really anything stopping your D from looking at rooms listed for Albert Einstein. As others have mentioned, you could live in Manhattan along the 2, 5, or BxM11 routes which would open up schools like SUNY-Downstate, Sinai, NYU, and Cornell.
