Student Life

So what do MIT students do for fun when they’re not studying?

Also, how much do students care about sports teams at MIT (especially football)?

Different groups of kids at MIT do different kinds of things. Some people enjoy going out into Boston and shopping or going to shows. Some people like to party, either at an MIT fraternity or at a dorm party. Some people like to build crazy stuff. My group of friends at MIT was inclined to order food in a large group and watch movies or have arguments.

I guess extracurriculars would also fall into things people do for fun – most people do at least one extracurricular, whether it’s sports-related (varsity or a club or intramural team), arts-related, student government-related, or something else.

Do you want to know what those of us who post on this board do for fun? I think that would be more enlightening than just asking what MIT students in general do for fun – MIT students are a really diverse group of people, and it’s impossible to answer that question without being nuance-free.

I would say that the average student at MIT doesn’t care much about MIT football. Most of the students in attendance at football games are either cheerleaders, friends of the team, or fraternity brothers of team members. The basketball team has a somewhat broader appeal – which I have always suspected is because basketball is inside. :)

Ha, I guess that’s why football is such a big deal in Texas… I was using air conditioning in my car until yesterday!
