<p>There appears to be many long term CT residents here, and I have a question about the issue of a student owning a car in CT?</p>
<p>DS is currently a grad student in CT. Both he and we are residents in California. We recently shipped one of our cars (registered in CA) to him. We wonder whether DS needs to change his driver license to CT and registers the car ( in our name now but it could be transferred to his name if needed) in CT.</p>
<p>When we asked our auto insurance company about his auto insurance, we were told that he could keep using his CA auto insurance - they actually “helped” to put his name the first on our auto insurance cards (and help raise the liability which we agree) for that car but I am not sure whether they really know what they are doing.</p>
<p>Somehow, just like CA, CT seems to be a more strict state regarding this kind of matter. (I know several of my coworkers in CA have not changed their driver license for almost a year! A few years ago, the police liked to come to our area and tried to give them tickets as if they knew what were going on - just too many people moving in from other states and keep using their old driver license on a car registered in other state likely illegally - heck, I heard 1/3 of the drivers do not buy auto insurance here. nSomehow the police stopped doing this recently. We joked that they get rid of those policemen who only do this easy job because of government’s budget cut. We may need more Facebook-like IPO here!)</p>
<p>Will a trip to an AAA office in CA help because they should know more about this?</p>
<p>Basically, we want to know how much we need to nag our child to do whatever is needed on his end.</p>
