Here’s my experience at ASU…

I am currently a freshman at Arizona State University. I go to the downtown campus. Now ASU has 4 campuses. Main Campus in Tempe, Downtown, West and Poly. I don’t know what to say except I find the school extremely unorganized. I was a criminal justice major to begin the semester and even if the advising offices and most of the classes for criminal justice is located downtown some classes that were required were only offered in Tempe. I go to Downtown and not Tempe for a reason. They make it extremely hard for you to double major. I switched my major to journalism. Then wanted to declare a double major in Criminal Justice. The advising for Criminal Justice is not very organized. You don’t have an assigned advisor so you walk in for an appointment and almost see a different person every time. Well when I was attempting to double major the criminal justice people were making it hard on me. They were telling me that it would be a lot of paperwork to fill out and they just seemed really lazy about it. They had me fill out this petition on reasons why I wanted to double major. Then they wanted me to write some statement saying why I wanted to also do criminal justice. The journalism program here is pretty good. You have an assigned advisor. Mine is great best advisor I have ever had she really cares. My issue is ASU only lets you take one lower division journalism class at a time so if you mess up you can throw off your graduation date.
Don’t even get me started on how horrible the west campus is. I lived there fall semester and my goodness. First off it’s located in Glendale Arizona. You might think hey that’s where the cardinals play or that’s where the dodgers do spring training. UM you are located far far away from that in the middle of nowhere. This is what surrounds the campus: An ace hardware, a denny’s, a bartending academy, a drive thru liquor store need I say more? Terrible atmosphere there. I do not even party! It’s horrible you can hear a pin drop there its so quiet. Even though I don’t party I like talking and meeting people but at ASU west there is a lack of people. The dorms though are amazing. I lived in a 4 bedroom apt style dorm. 4 people, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 4 sinks, a living room and a kitchen. The campus is pretty much dead all day. I remember going around with my camera during the 3-4 pm time range and snapping photo’s of the campus and there was not a single person in the photo. The cafe has great food but overpriced and it closes early. It is a commuter campus. It is very convenient and has nice class sizes though. The events are terrible and it’s just an overall awful place. Keep in mind this opinion is coming from someone who doesn’t party, who made the dean’s list and who is very much involved with the school.
I can’t really speak for Tempe though. From what I have seen it’s huge! It’s like a mile walk to each class. Tempe is where all the parties happen. It was mentioned earlier that people go to ASU for the wrong reason just to party. VERY TRUE. Even people from west I knew were so mad that WEST was well west and not tempe. Tempe has a lot to offer and it can be a lot of fun. But expect drunkies, sex addicts, druggies and the partier types.
I will add that school spirit here is amazing the school is all about maroon and gold and the sun devils.
Another negative aspect the school spends way to much money on unnecessary things
I feel in most aspects ASU is a 3rd rate education school which is why I’M OUT OF HERE after the semester.
I can’t wait to transfer. In fact I’m moving back home after this semester this school or place is just not for me.
