Student Suspended for Speaking Spanish

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10372148/</a> is the link for the rest of the story.

Isn’ that a bit extreme? I mean my school teachs you a second language and encourages you to speak it outside of class.

The link is faulty.

It is certainly extreme, if that is what happened. I am assuming, though, that there is more to the story than what Zach has said.

that’s ridiculous

Damn, it was working a minute ago.

What do you expect, it’s Kansas. They have truly become the armpit of American education.

I’m in San Antonio so it’s obviously not much of an issue, kids speak spanish all the time. I, of course, have no idea what they’re saying but there are rarely problems with rudeness because of it (though it can become annoying). I’ve got to go with corranged on this one, however: my guess is that the kid was being obnoxious about it when reprimanded, or pretended he didn’t know english to **** off the teacher or something.

Does anyone bother to read anymore?

Well Kansas also wants Intelligent Design in their science cirriculum so it just seems natural that they would only do another idiotic thing like this…

Ein was für Bündel Dummköpfe.

I wonder if one could get in trouble for speaking German?

Oh god. I had actually not heard about this. I’ve also never heard of that high school (I live maybe 20 minutes southwest of downtown Kansas City), but I guess the article did say it was a small one.

For the record, I speak Spanish in school with my friends all the time. It’s just sorta for fun, plus I guess it helps us in our Spanish classes.

So on behalf of my state, I sincerely apologize. We suck, at everything, big time. I would just request that you don’t judge our whole state for the actions of a few people in positions of power. We are seriously not all bigots and Bible-thumping, xenophobic, white supremicists.

But I guess it sort of makes sense in a twisted way. Most people who hate the way things are in Kansas eventually move somewhere else, leaving the state to be controlled by the hardcore conservative weirdos.

I read the article a few days ago and I was aghast at the reaction of the principal. It’s pretty…well…to my mind somewhat…rash and illogical.

My school’s an international school, so the teacher tries to enforce an “English-only” policy in classes (except for the foreign languages like Spanish, French and Romanian) so everybody can understand each other. In the hallways, though, it’s pretty much a free-for-all. You hear Korean, Japanese, Romanian (the overwhelming majority), Bulgarian, Urdu mingled with the English. Nobody’s going to suspend or expell a student for speaking in another language unless it’s used to insult someone. (Last year, a student got suspended for calling another student “b*tch” in a non-English language in Spanish class.)

Same here. My school is full of different languages, so its not a big deal. It is an English school but you hear so many different languages. Sometimes even the teachers in class deviate from English. It’s never been a big deal.

Two ridiculous things.

One being the kid gets suspended.

Now the punishment is gone, and they’re still getting a lawyer?

Both parties are idiots.

You’re forgetting how much Americans like to sue other people.

Hmmm…sing it, sister.

lthat sounds pretty racist to me. our espanol teachers only wish we could talk correct spanish. in fact a student came from colombia last week and the teacher was thrilled because she doesn’t know english, so we’re forced to use spanish with her, while she tries to learn el ingl

God forbid someone speaks another language in this English country!..damn those foreign devils…if they have somethin to say, they should say it so everyone can understand em…haha…whatta moronic policy…many a time have a few of my Pakistani friends and I spoken Urdu in class and befuddled our classmates…and i went to highschool in southwest virginia…i see no grounds for justification along those lines…what’s next? banning foreign language studies in highschool? hahahahahahaha get real

What are the grounds for suspending him? There must be some. Otherwise this is a clear violation of Amendment 1.

it is against his first amendement rights but then again the school can restrain his first amendment rights when they find it appropriate as stated in Kuhmlemier(sp?) v. hazelwood. However, this isn’t really anything like the case. Hope this goes to the Supreme Court. We really need a lot of decisions that prevent schools from doing these ridiculous things(not talking about hazelwood since it’s controversial but about the suspension thing)

Well, I would sue too even after… they deserve it they only undid the suspension’cause they had to. and money doesnt suck eitherrr.

I think the U.S. should make the offical language Spanish. They love to put everything in Spanish all over products and bend over backwords for illegal immigrants. So what the hell, let’s just make the official language Spanish.

“lthat sounds pretty racist to me.”

A person who speaks Spanish could come from any race.
