Student Suspended for Speaking Spanish

I support the suspension. It is an alternative school if some people missed that. Teachers need to worry for their safety and must at all times know what kids are talking about. If fore warned, it should be a very clear cut decision to suspend.

Yes I understand the situation between Europe and the US is different- but it is based on the same principle. We should not hold recent immigrants to the same language standards as native speakers. With proper integration immigrants learn the language. But for some reason there seems to be no movement to properly integrate recent immigrants into US culture- help them learn English. You can’t really learn a language to the point where you feel comfortable speaking it on your own. We have the same problem here in Germany with recent Turkish immigrants- they hole themselves up in their own neighborhoods, don’t make an effort to integrate and learn German. This is a major failure.

Second I was forced to move here with my family. I wasn’t given the choice. The opportunities in the US, despite our measure of “crappiness” are worlds better than many opportunities in Mexico. I’ve seen poverty in Mexico, whole families living in cardboard houses, with spare tin comprising of a make shift roof. The meager money they make here they send back to their families. What we call crappy for many is a life much better than they could ever have achieved back home.

Instead of bemoaning people for not learning the language, we should make a better effort to integrate them into our communities and our countries. Then we don’t run into problems like France had recently with their riots.

scarlet, i’m not talking about people straight off the boat last week. I’m talking about people who have been here for years, and STILL havn’t learned the language. Thats ridiculous. I dont know where you lived when you were in the United States. But when I go to New York (I live about 20 minutes away) it really gets me that people can’t speak english. And honestly to tell you the truth, its not even spanish that bothers me that much, its just the general idea that you can come here and not learn the language and get by. Ride a NYC taxi cab to find out what I mean. I can’t imagine what it must be like in Miami, where I wouldn’t be surprised if more people spoke spanish than english.

I completely understand what you mean. Which is why we need to integrate these immigrants. They often live in all spanish-speaking neighborhoods, their kids go to schools where the majority of kids are immigrants or poor as well. If you lived in an environment like that there would seem to be no real need to learn english. That’s the problem. There has to be a way to better involve them in society, have them learn english and participate.

Hey you guys? Do you know GoldShadow. You should go to his dedication thread!

Everyone is missing a key factor.
This is an alternative school.
That is where the kids who bring weapons, drugs to school go, along with people who are constantly in serious trouble.
This is not a case of an immigrant speaking another language in a mainstream high school.

mattd, i understand you point. obviously this post got sidetracked and put on a “bigger picture.” mostly by me…sorry guys. but yeah, there was stuff going on besides him saying some sentence in spanish.

I wonder how all the gated communities and suburbs will feel when a bunch of Mexicans start moving in from the inner cities.

The bigger problem at hand is Z. Rubio’s overuse of the faux verb “to be like”, when he should have been using “to say” or “to think”.

God, assimilation is poison.

Good. He Deserves To Be Suspended. As My Buddy Mr.savage Would Agree With Me, This Is America, Learn Our Language. Yeah We Are A Country Of Immigrants, But Assimilate To American Culture Dude…which Includes The Language Of English.

who says they’re not learning English? especially since they’re students.
(it’s typically older people who are more obstinate about refusing to adapt)

there’s still no reason to suspend a kid over conversing with a friend. again, way to be paranoid.

z2thay, first off, don’t capitalize every word in your sentences, its stupid - just as you saying that Mike Savage is a friend of yours. I agree everyone in this country should have to speak english to live here. I also am pretty conservative. But Michael Savage is a moron - and if you are in line with him in his political views, then you are equally as obtuse.

Sorry I Don’t Do Things Like That. I’m Not Into Weird Forms Of Masterbation. But If I Were I’m Sure You And Your Nazi Friend Mr. Savage Would Like To Have Me Drawn And Quartered. By The Way, You Can Spell Ass Out And It Won’t Be Edited.
