Andrews University in Berrien Springs Michigan has been well known for its success in transforming B students into A students. This success is measured in admission to Graduate school and preformance on national exams compared to the students’ incoming GPA and SAT/ACT scores. The students develop an enthusiasm for science that is truly amazing.
The problem of which I’m writing arose in the school’s application for a grant from the NSF to study the success of their new Behavioral Neuroscience program. The NSF directed them to first study why their Biology program was so unusually successful. Having to rewrite your grant is not usually a happy occasion, but in this case I suspect they were happy and proud to do so.

"Students entering the Andrews University Biology Department are coming in below average and leaving well-above average, with some of the best scores in the country. Something is happening during their time at Andrews that is helping them turn their Bs and Cs into As. "

Andrews is run by the Seventh-Day Adventist church, a conservative Protestant denomination, so the atmosphere is healthy and happy but not for everyone. If they make it into the Princeton Review, they will be featured prominently in the “Got Milk” and “Don’t Inhale” ratings. The campus is beautiful and is 30 miles from Notre Dame.
