Can anyone help me understand what can be done when a child is not happy about studio assignments please??? My son didn’t get his first choice teacher at any of his schools and is really fretting about it. Does anyone have advice about why this happens and whether it is ever a good idea to request a different studio before accepting an offer? It seems to me that if you were not assigned to your first choice the reason was that there was not room or that the teacher did not want to teach you? Would you just be offending the teacher who did accept you by asking the question while not actually helping your situation?
I would advise that he take lessons with the teachers to see if he has any rapport with them. Your son might end up liking a teacher that was selected for him more than he thought he would. Also some schools are fine with students switching their teachers later on (others are not, so maybe research that). I do recommend that your son choose a school over a particular teacher. What happens if the teacher decides to leave?
great advice! The issue is he has already taken lessons and master classes and summer programs with all of the teachers already over the years and really knew his preferences. I suspect he picked the most desired teachers in the profession as #1 choices.
How he felt their rapport was in the past may be different from what he thinks now for two reasons:
- He has made progress, which might imply the teachers now offer different types of advice and corrections
- The “top” teachers may actually have less time for their students. You want to be in a studio that values you, IMO
