Study abroad as a transfer?

I’m currently at a CCC, and I’m going to be applying to UCLA as a transfer for fall 2012 and I was wondering, is it possible to study abroad for a year and still be able to graduate within two years?

depends on your major, and how heavy of a workload u’d be willing to have.

Well, I’m planning to major in English, and I want to study in London.

Onderbread… I believe it’s possible. I am an incoming transfer student for this fall, also majoring in English. First of all, you can not study abroad your junior year. UCLA is one of the few UC’s who require you to be an official and admitted UCLA student before submitting an application for EAP. By the time you are admitted, you will have missed the deadlines for ANY EAP for junior year. That means that all you have left is your senior year, which I consider a bad time to go study abroad considering that your units may take a while to transfer (possibly delaying your graduation?) and it’s your last year to get close to professors for letters of recommendation, do internships etc. for grad school or the career world ahead of you.

There are two summer programs that UCLA offers where you stay in England with other students and a professor from UCLA. What I think is nice about these two programs is that you will take classes that will directly articulate with classes you need at UCLA.

What you could then do is go for the summer and then study abroad in London for the fall quarter through EAP if such a program exists. I, personally wanted to study abroad a year like you, but in Ireland. However, for the above reasons mentioned I just don’t realistically see it working out. So I am saving my Shakespeare units and applying for one of these summer UCLA programs and then applying through EAP to study in Ireland for the fall quarter. It’s still a good amount of time, I would say just a few months short of a year.

Also, if you end up going anywhere besides UCLA in the UC system, then this could all work out differently. For example, even Berkeley was going to extend the application date for me. So if this happens, then I would look into doing the EAP application ASAP. The application is a pretty long process. Good luck! :)

Mkay, thank you so much! Yeah, it’s a bit of a bummer missing out on opportunities like that. I was hoping to do the immersion program and take classes at other universities, but if I can only go summer, so be it!
