Yes - cancelled due to a lack of students signing the final form. She was told earlier it was on but I guess half didn’t commit financially.
She meets with a study abroad advisor tomorrow to talk about affiliate alternatives.
I’m simply asking others if they know of any short term through their experiences - shaking the leaves a bit.
If the Maymester doesn’t happen, it’s not the end of the world. But if I find a suitable sub, it’s great.
You never know who’s kid went for three weeks to study something in a similar realm.
If there aren’t any, it’s ok too.
No it’s not required. A semester is (the other thread). But this would have been Asian exposure for her - she’ll likely do her semester in Europe. And the two classes fit into her remaining requirements nicely.
So timing wise (time to come home and intern), academically, and exposure wise, this was a win.
If she doesn’t go, she’ll have a job / internship hopefully and take the second half of geology for her science general Ed. Took the first half last year.
Thx.
Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully the folks at her college will also have some ideas. But thankfully, this isn’t required…so not a crisis. A disappointment for her…but not a crisis.
API study abroad has a China summer study this summer. Not sure if the dates work for your daughter. My kid did two study abroad programs run by API (one summer program through her university and a semester directly through API) and both were excellent and well-run.
Last year, my daughter’s abroad program did not go - not enough kids and the one at Case Western we were going to do secondarily - also cancelled. It might be better to work directly with a physical university vs. a school sponsored trip.
It all worked out - she had a great internship with the state in summer and another in fall at the DC Semester. But to graduate, she needs at least three weeks and 6 credits - and she doesn’t want to go next Fall because she has a year long Bachelor Essay she’s required to do in concert with faculty. And it needs to be classes - as she’s already earned 9 credits of internship and can’t get anymore.
So my question - is there anyone who sent their kids in summer or has experience with NYU Shanghai or Temple U Japan?
Also, there are some independent programs - I believe one is called ACAS in Thailand. It sounds good but my daughter’s friend went and didn’t have a good experience but we need to dig why. Does anyone have any experience with the independent programs in Asia?
I see all the responses above - thank you - but just looking to see if anyone has any direct experience with Asia programs - third party or through US Host universities.
The UMD from @Hippobirdy looks interesting - but is only three credits. And we need six but any more like this would be awesome. I also checked BU and UGA - thanks for the suggestions above but they don’t seem to have anything.
Thanks for any program experiences you may have (specific to Asia).
I found this one - does anyone have any experience with this organization (linked below)?
I realize it’s a very narrow subject - so it’s expected there won’t be much - but appreciate any firsthand experiences.
@tsbna44 since this is a requirement of her college/program, isn’t someone there giving your daughter guidance?
I don’t know if Boston University has what you are looking for, but they have very robust and well organized study abroad programs. You might want to check there.
Study abroad means taking classes - it’s not typically an internship unless specifically advertised that way. My daughter studied abroad in Ecuador and went to school.
I am confused about a few things- why does it have to be Asia, and what is the school telling her to do given they canceled the study abroad again and it is a graduation requirement?
I would have her speak to an advisor in the study abroad program.
If it’s a graduation requirement, won’t the school need to approve of the study abroad classes/program? And, shouldn’t they have a way for your D to fulfill this requirement with their own programs? Seems super odd to have that as a graduation requirement but not offer a way for students to meet the requirement internally.
Ok it seems this was canceled last summer but she needs this to graduate? And she is currently a junior and doesn’t want to study abroad during the fall or spring of her senior year?
I think the only solution is to speak with somebody from study abroad and set something up for this summer. I just checked my daughter’s school and there are plenty of summer options.
Agreeing with others she needs to be working carefully with study abroad office and her advisor to make sure the program will be accepted for credit. D20’s school is very picky about unknown programs and applying credits to the major.
