Study Abroad Cancelled - now what?

Yes she has an advisor for each major and study abroad has affiliates - the same ones as BU and most every school. We will find something.

The preference was faculty led vs unknown third party - ACAS, CIEE.

I’ve looked at 100 colleges. But the big issue with faculty trips - many don’t go. They all say - if enough sign up.

It seems Spain and Italy go. Greece. But Asia and Africa don’t. Plus many are two weeks or are internships or the classes don’t fill a remaining need. We are looking for perfection - short of her school one, I’m not sure there is.

Two other options - she can go and take classes that don’t fill a remaining need. Or she can take Spanish. Because she wasn’t able to keep Chinese last year, she can’t keep going. They have two tracks in global studies: one a globalist track with three years of the same language. Two - an area focus - with two languages. It’s counter intuitive but that’s what they do.

It’s dad (me) pushing for Asia. She’s had Chinese in both hs and college. College is the time to do this vs Spain, you can go anytime.

Just seeing if anyone has truly direct experiences - but my wife says, she’s got it handled. But - she didn’t know about NYU. I think it fits perfectly - well if the classes pass - it’s just priced ridiculously high. But it’s the cost of waiting til the last minute.

Thanks

Yes, any thing we find - like the NYU program, will have to be approved academically.

I think the affiliates are the easiest sell.

It was the same even in DC with her internship at the think tank - it has to be approved.

But the study abroad and profs won’t do the heavy lifting. They have exchange and affiliates and that’s where they go to. They haven’t necessarily been a good fit but my daughter will have to open up.

When we started this journey, she was to do a semester. This would have been the time to go but she didn’t want to be gone an entire year and she was in Fall already.

Just looking for ideas. My wife has the methods covered - as she tells me.

But she said reach out to ask about NYU or Temple for ‘reviews’ of experience in the program. Or USAC or CIEE - I added them. They seem to be the affiliates most schools use.

Thx.

As she’s an International scholar (a program within Honors, at least 3 weeks, 6 credits).

My wife says it will get done but since I’m pushing Asia over Spain, etc that I should ask about the programs I brought up.

And she said to ask about affiliates as likely many kids have gone that way.

I just believe you should take advantage of college - and I’d rather her go to Asia (her love) or Africa vs Europe - where she already been and can get to more easily.

That’s why I’m asking. It’s not about advising.

The sad part is all these schools have faculty led trips and so many cancel. On the U of CA last year, it seemed over half were cancelled.

George Mason, btw, has the best looking but my wife says - we don’t need those classes.

Anyway, if anyone has first hand experience / reviews with NYU Shanghai and Temple Japan - that’s what I seek. Utah has an Asia campus but nothing in summer.

Maybe I should start a thread for those two and UCAS and CIEE and more will respond.

Thx.

So…she doesn’t have to go to Asia.

Is she required to do a study abroad, or is this also optional. Can she graduate without this study abroad, even if it means dropping one of her majors?

Required - at least three weeks, 6 credits. So she’s chosen summer over semester.

I’m going to open a more targeted thread.

Can she drop one of the majors and eliminate this study abroad requirement?

Or do one that is not Asia to fulfill it and move on.

I am still confused.

If this is required can she go to the study abroad office and figure it out with them?

She’s unwilling to drop the second major ( her primary at that, she added Poli sci later) and to leave the special program.

It’s not going to be an issue getting done. That’s not in question.

It just might not get done in Asia…that’s all.

Wherever she is, she and her bf plan to travel after. He graduates June 15 so timing - some are May-June, some June - July is another barrier.

Just seeking feedback on specific programs.

That’s all.

Thanks.

There are plenty of options. That’s not the question. I’m seeking feedback on specific ones. It’s why I need to open a more targeted thread.

Thanks

I would not let vacation plans with her BF drive this decision…but that’s me.

I think she will have more success finding a June/July program.

And yes, this probably won’t be in Asia, which doesn’t sound like it’s a necessity anyway.

There are many in May but yes she was need flexibility.

It may not be Asia but that’s what I’m asking for - if anyone has any hidden gems or feedback on the list I mentioned. Thx

Then she needs to pick one of these if her priority is traveling with her BF.

My opinion, her priority should be satisfying her college graduation requirements.

Yes not asking for feedback on that. Just on formal program experiences. Thanks

Ok so the issue is not fulfilling requirements, which can be done. The issue is finding something in Asia thst does not conflict with the BFs graduation and their travel plans?

Is this correct? I agree that a more targeted post would be best.

No. The goal is to get feedback on NYU Shanghai, Temple in Japan, or UCAS or CIEE programs in Asia since most every school uses them.

That’s why I need to open a new thread.

That’s all I need.

Thanks

@hebegebe any ideas?

Yes, I’m asking for experiences with it. It seems like it could fit.

My wife just said the ‘other’ C of C faculty led - to Japan - more on Art History - not an interest - could work. She’ll find out about attendance thus far tomorrow. It’s too Japan.

I’ve sent the NYU classes to my daughter to see if interest. If they are, then she’d work with her advisor on matchability…similar to other schools. They mostly seem to work similarly.

And many use other school’s programs - even big name schools will say in their descriptions - and your credits will come from Elon or Drake etc.

So it’s common after finding something, that then the home departments have to bless the classes as a substitute.

I will open a new thread. Let’s let this one close. Thx

Your daughter’s advisor should be able to tell her if C of C will accept any of these as credits toward a degree. That should be the top priority, in my opinion.
