Yes…true… Some of the students in my D’s program had the same experience as T’s daughter and did not have a problem getting transcripts.
A friend of mine came home from the overseas program with an incomplete.
This was before email and faxes. You cannot IMAGINE the hassle of getting that incomplete wiped from the transcript before grad school applications went out!!!
There was a grading glitch when my kid did his study abroad in London. The grade translation looked like the kid had gotten C grades (as did all the others in his program that term). The college dealt with it, but you can imagine the shock when the grades came out! Kid really got all A grades.
Just an update on my daughter:
She’s finally off to Asia.
She’s on solo travel (scares me) to Tapei - got in 3A my time - there til Monday. I already got the, dad the night market is gross and no one speaks English. I’m like great - use your Chinese and she says they don’t speak Mandarin - but I’m sure she’ll grow some during these next few days.
As I told her - this is your major and this is study abroad - so learn and explore.
Hopefully she gets through the solo part OK - I worry about sex trafficking, etc. and she says there’s an Australian girl she’s networked with and they might meet up - and they’ve facetimed b4 - don’t worry. I worry. Maybe this girl is a ruse. I read too much scary stuff.
On Monday, she flies to Japan - for some more travel. There she will meet up with a girl she doesn’t know - but who is in the study abroad program she’s attending. I forget how long she’ll be there - maybe 5 days or a week. I know she’s going to the Disney Sea resort. Anyway, she’s been texting with this girl a while.
Finally, she flies to Korea where she’ll be for four weeks until she comes home August 8th.
This is the “study abroad” part. She is on the U of Nebraska program at Hankook University - apparently a school where students from all over the world study. She’ll have two classes - one from Hankook and one taught by U of Nebraska.
Took two years and a lot of research to find a program that wasn’t cancelling - but I’m glad she’s off and running and hoping it’s a great experience.
Thanks for everyone’s thoughts as we developed a plan to meet the abroad requirement.
She will be fine! Glad she found a program that didn’t get cancelled.
Interestingly, Nebraska thanked her for being #10, implying that she saved theirs - although they are going to an established campus so not sure why they’d have a minimum.
They have a lot of field trips - so should be great.
So glad things worked out for her! Hope it is a fantastic experience.
One lesson which was instilled in me early on- and which I taught my kids- if something feels “off”, it probably is.
You don’t need to worry about being culturally insensitive if someone is following you, keeps asking “let me escort you to your hotel”, telling you “I can find you a bank which will give you a better exchange rate”. Or if a taxi driver tries to turn off the meter (in a country with metered taxis) saying “let’s keep this arrangement between us”. Insist on the meter- or just open the door and get out.
I’ve never been the victim of a violent crime- but I’ve been pickpocketed-- and my spidey sense was up but I was reluctant to seem like an “ugly American” by doing something about it. It’s nice to meet friendly people overseas, but invitations to “have dinner with me and my elderly mother” when you met someone three minutes ago might be benign-- or might not.
Your D will be fine. Sounds like she’s developing street smarts!
