Study abroad France in summer

I’ve heard comments that university students don’t wear shorts as much as americans. Would it be inappropriate for D to wear shorts? She will be in southern France in July.

It’s probably true that they don’t wear shorts as much as Americans, but it certainly wouldn’t be inappropriate. Esp. when the weather is really hot.

Certainly she can wear whatever she would like! However, maybe it will be an opportunity for cultural insight. My French friend taught me how to wear a scarf. Maybe she will learn how to wear some sassy skirts. They are very cool in the summer and are fun to wear.

Our D just left for France. She will be travelling around with a faculty-led group for 3 weeks, and will end up in Lyon where she will be living with a family and taking classes at a university. She and the other young women were told by the professors in the French department that the exchange families last year complained about the female students wearing “short-shorts”. They were asked not to bring any short-shorts. D felt she didn’t have any shorts that are long enough (although even to my critical eye I wouldn’t consider many of her shorts to be THAT short) so she decided to wait until she gets there and go shopping. While she does have a few pair of “bermuda” type shorts, she would rather wait and buy some after she sees what the others are wearing.

Southern France can get pretty hot, so I don’t believe that none of the students wear shorts.
