Study abroad in Shanghai

Hey, does anyone know how easy it is to transfer courses from Fudan University EAP Shanghai to apply towards a management science major? One of my friends tried to do it last year, but none of the classes she took abroad counted towards her majoring, which totally defeated the purpose of going abroad for spring semester in China (which focuses on business and economics) and totally defeats the purpose of EAP (which is to transfer letter grades from study abroad onto your UC transcript).

I don’t know if the Econ dept at UCSD is just stingy and stupid, but when I went into advising, I brought along a course list of 51 courses, and the advisor looked through all of them and only approved ONE for sure (about 5 more had ?s and maybes next to them), which I found to be pretty ridiculous. I mean, they push students to choose EAP because they can transfer courses, but they don’t let them actually transfer them??

Another one of my friends studied abroad in England and got many of his courses transferred for his structural engineering major (which is probably way more specialized than simply economics…), and he said he got all of them by petitioning. I know that you need to petition when you return, but does anyone have tips on how to petition so that it’s more successful or what courses they’ve taken that have been applicable to upper div man. sci classes?

You should try to get the syllabi for the classes you plan on taking abroad (either by emailing those profs or getting it from former students) and getting a UCSD prof to look them over. If a professor says that the Fudan class is sufficient and covers the same stuff, then the counselors won’t really have a choice.

I did reverse petitioning (using UCSD classes to get out of Columbia classes) this way, and the syllabi are much more useful than the catalog’s course descriptions.

And study-abroad should be focused on the experience, don’t feel the need to achieve everything you would do in a normal quarter at UCSD. Some majors are extremely difficult to do abroad; I’ve had friends who delayed graduation for a year just so they could do EAP/OAP.

Any idea what I could do if the syllabi aren’t available beforehand? They probably won’t be available until around the time I start classes next year. That seems like a good idea though, so I’ll try to work on that. Thanks!

the classes are offered every year, just get the ones from those
