Hey guys,

I currently study Medicine at the LMU in Munich, Germany.
I plan on studying one semester, if possible a whole year, abroad at an Ivy-league university, it does not necessarily have to be Harvard.

My problem: I keep finding information for electives, and for my final clinical year, but not for a whole term abroad. Is it possible at all to apply for something like that at any of the Ivy-League-Universities?

If so, how and where can i find application forms, requirements, do you know any?
I still have about 1 1/2 years to prepare everything.

I would greatly appreciate any hints or information that you guys might have.

I don’t think what you’re describing is possible at ANY US med school.

Contact adcoms at the prospective Med. Schools and you will know your answers. There are foreign students at the American Med. Schools. I am not familiar with their path of getting there.

There are foreign students enrolled at American med schools but that’s not the same as doing a “semester abroad” at an american med school.

Hey guys,

Thank you for your answers.
I did actually write each one of them an email yesterday and those who have replied so far all say the same thing: That they do not offer anything like what i was hoping for.

I believe foreign med students enrolled at an American university right now, applied the normal way, like Americans would do. My problem was, that i want to stay enrolled at the LMU in Germany to finish my studies here, but not miss the opportunity of studying abroad.

I will now focus on going to Harvard or Cornell for my clerkship or electives since they are a partner-universities of mine.
Any other advice is much appreciated.

if you just wanted the chance to live/work in the states for a short period, then definitely look into doing what we in the states call an “away rotation.” I have friends who have spent a month working in hospitals in other countries at the end of their final year basically just for fun. Spending a few weeks (e.g. 4-8) at a Cornell or Harvard hospital working/living is definitely something that might be possible for you and your school should be able to help you organize this if it is.

What you are describing does not exist at ANY US Medical School. You can do an away rotation, maybe even a few? Each one lasts about 4 weeks. But to do a whole year or half a year requires that you are a student attending that medical school. They do not permit people not accepted to their medical school to take up the resources of half a year of medical school without being enrolled at their school. What I would suggest is cobbling a bunch of back to back “away rotations” in the same city. For example in Boston, you could do 1 month at Mass General (Harvard), 1 month at Brigham (Harvard), 1 month at Tufts, 1 month at BU, 1 month at BC. You can live in the same place in Boston and commute to each of those.
