I posted a few months ago that my college D started taking Zoloft. She has been on it now for about three months and it does seem to be working–her mood does seem both better and more stable.

My question now is, she is applying to study abroad next year and one of the forms that she must submit is a certification of good health, or something like that, that has to be signed by a physician. One of the topics is whether she has ever been or is now being trated for a mental disorder, and what meds she is taking.

Might the depression and Zoloft disqualify her, even if the physician signs that overalll she is okay to go? Obviously if the physician says no, she’s not going–but if he says okay might the program still say no? Anyone have experience with this kind of situation?

Don’t have an answer ( I know it can create issues for getting insurance and certain jobs), just wait to follow the discussion.

my daughter is studying abroad currently and is on several medications that are used to manage mental/neuro disorders.
She did have to fill out a lot of paperwork & we did have to have our insurance put her on vacation status as she wasn’t going to be in a country where she could get her ADD meds filled for example, but everything was cleared fairly smoothly.

IMO, they just want to know what the student is taking in case of emergency ( which is appropriate), & if the young person wasn’t stable that would be a concern for everyone, but they are so common nowdays I do not think it is a red flag.

My questions would be- does she need to bring a year supply with her ( which would be a pain) & is there a dr where she can check in at least bi-monthly?
By the time she goes next year, she will probably be at her optimal dose, but should also be aware of contra indications & risks.

( My daughter for example, is on meds that both dehydrate you & interfere with your bodies ability to cool itself. Of course the countries where she is traveling are on the hot & humid side.
I hope she took lots of emergenc-e & I know she took a water filter )
