If anybody has experience with this, how easy is it to study abroad in an east-asian country without taking any language courses beforehand? I checked out the Cornell Abroad site, and there seemed to be quite a few programs with no language requirement, but some people were telling me that these programs are competitive & it’s hard to get in without some background. Is this true?

From what I’ve read, if the language of instruction is in a foreign language, you need two years of classes in that language to be eligible.

But if the classes and such are taught in english, then you might be able to go without any language. I still don’t know if I’d like to be in Japan or China for a few months without knowing any of the language.

Not sure… Hong Kong might be ok without Chinese. I highly suggest Cape Town, South Africa! Europe is boring. Asia/Africa are definitely the way to go, and I have heard South America is cool too, but you likely need spanish.

i know CALS (or at least specific majors in CALS) has classes where you study abroad for a week or two in a different country.

ie: there’s an AEM class that focuses on food science that takes people on a 1-week trip to China. you don’t have to take chinese beforehand, but many do (1-2 semesters worth).
