I’m applying to a study abroad program in Thailand. Are study abroad programs really selective?
Depends on your school and their program. Do you have a study abroad advisor or department at your college? They would be the people to ask.
Are you doing this as a college student?
We have some experience with study abroad both for high school students and university students. For high school students they seemed to be as concerned about having kids with appropriate personalities as they were about academics (eg, the two high school students that we hosted were both a delight to have in our home for a few months). For university we sort of suspected that being academically strong enough to do okay was probably more important.
Regardless, both seemed “a little bit but not too much selective”. Certainly this does not seem to be anything like the level of a “top 25” university admissions. There is likely to be some limit regarding how many students the program can accommodate at one time.
Hopefully your school has a study abroad advisor that can both answer this question, and also advise you on cost, visa requirements, and potential health issues if any. I did get a hepatitis A shot before going to Thailand, but this was pretty easy to do.
Thank you for the responses. I’m applying to KEI Abroad as a college student. Is anyone familiar with this program?
