study abroad

Is study abroad a good EC in and of itself, or do you have to do something special during it? The former implies that you only have to state that you did it and it will be impressive and make you competitive. The latter implies that you have to incorporate your experiences in your essays or something. I’m a senior in high school and will be attending CUNY Baruch this fall. Do transfer students (junior year) typically study abroad before transferring? IS it weird for a CUNY (city) student to study abroad? Do people even do it at a commuter school like Baruch, or as a freshman in the first place (summer before sophomore year)?

I’m considering this because I want experience and ECs and also because I won’t get the college experience at all at Baruch. I feel like this will hold me back despite being in NYC. I also want to be competitive. Is this a good option or a waste of time and money?
