study body size question

i was wondering if rochester was the place where you always see the same people and you know everyone or if there is a bit more space. i really don’t want to go to college with someone from high school, but i know someone going to rochester. i don’t want to make that a defining factor in my college choice, so i was wondering if it would be easy to distance myself from someone.

interesting question!

If you guys would major in different areas, I don’t think it’s that easy to see the same person over and over again! Whatsoever, it is a medium size campus!

A graduate of U of R told me that “the campus is small enough to be comfortable with, yet big enough so you can avoid people you don’t like.” Take that for what it’s worth, haha.

I know exactly how you feel m8 -

I was told the same thing by my interviewer (a graduate of UofR Class of 01) - sounds neat =P

oops i just realized i typed study not student! i guess that’s because i was feeling sick yesterday

Not directly an answer to your question, but the U of R is now officially the largest employer in Rochester. It is now a bigger employer than either Xerox or Kodak (both Rochester born companies). While the student body isn’t huge, there are people working for U of R all over the place.

Living in Rochester, we just keep hearing about the growth of the U of R, especially the Medical School and Strong Hospital.

That’s what my uncle (an alums) said either. He loves everything about U of R, and urges me to go there, saying that if I missed this chance, I would regret forever (that must be exaggerated!) And he also believes U of R will be more recoginzed in the coming future.

I got my acceptance letter on 3/21. But, I still haven’t heard anything from the financial aid office. sigh! :(

hey smartkid - no worries - ppl from another thread also said they havent received their financial aid packages yet…they called UR and UR said the last batch was mailed 4/3
See for urself:

hey jelomom2003 - glad to hear that about UofR! How is it in Rochester - is it a nice place? Downtown Rochester seems like a pretty busy place (of course nothing will ever compare to my home-nyc lol but I am willing to compromise =P ) I guess its also cool to have a #1 Music school in the area incase you ever feel like hearing world class music lol.

I’m not looking forward to a huge student ’ body’ , if you know what I mean…

OK Awakien- How is Rochester? As I answer this, remember the following; I am a parent and a resident, as such, my take will be different from what you may wish to hear. Also, you are from NYC!

U of R is a hike into the actual downtown area, and through some questionable areas of town. Unfortunately, Rochester has the highest homicide rate/capita of any city in NY (even higher than NYC), so it is important to use good judgement. The Eastman School (Music) is actually downtown, I would guess there is transportation between the two sites. Also, personally, I would be careful venturing across the bridge on campus and into the 19th Ward area. Some old homes and some not so great places in that area. While U of R is listed as a suburban school, it really pushes the boundaries of the city. The true suburban colleges in Rochester are St.John Fisher College, Nazareth College, Roberts Weslyan, and RIT (but that is really removed)

Surrounding the U of R is the Mt Hope Cemetery (http://www.fomh.org/history.php), actually it is historically a cool place and home to the likes of Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglas! The tours there are quite interesting…really! Also, in walking distance from campus is Highland Park, home of the Lilac Festival(http://www.robertstech.com/run/places.htm</a>) a wonderful place to spread out a blanket and relax/study. Also, very close by is the junction of the Genesee River and Erie Canal and the old towpath. Everyone in Rochester uses this constantly to bike, run, and walk along.
Really, there is lots of traffic around the U of R Campus, but not places that I see college kids having a reason to venture into for much. The campus is contained between the river, cemetery and hospital. Malls and shopping are a distance.

jelomom2003, so do you like Rochester? If you got a chance, would you move to the other city?

i’m interested in having a lot of interaction with the culture of a city…like museums and all that. is there lots of opportunities to go to them as a student at rochester? and easy access?

There is a free shuttle that runs frequently between the main campus and Eastman. Students can attend many of the concerts there either free or at reduced cost. The museum district is not that far from Eastman. Some areas of the city and safer than others and you need to use common sense. My son lives in an apartment a couple blocks from Eastman. He has not had any problems but he is 6’4" so less likely to be targeted. He sometimes walks with friends to the public market. He says the walk is through some sketchy neighborhoods but he goes with several others during the day and has never run into problems. He says that Rochester has grown on him over the 4 years he has been there. His younger brother will likely attend in the fall. My older son, and Eastman student, especially likes the club music scene in Rochester.

Great places to eat:

Aja Noodles

Jines (and a few others on Park Ave)

Great Northern Pizza

King and I (Thai)

Dinosaur BBQ

On Mt. Hope, a walk from the River Campus, are Bruggers Bagels, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, etc.

ROC on!!!

Oh that settles it, there’s Thai food nearby. I’m going! :stuck_out_tongue: (Ok so it isn’t a deciding factor, but it’s really good to know.)

Sounds like it’s a good idea to bring a lock box and walk with a friend. Does the campus feel safe?

What is the actual campus like? I haven’t visited. Is it pretty enclosed or very open/merged with parts of the city/suburbs? What are the buildings like? Any details would be great. :)

Oh and also, what are the different dorms like? For some other schools they’ve got reviews of each dorm (ie this one’s close to everything but not much community, this one’s beautiful but old and drafty, this one has huge rooms…etc). Any opinions about this?

The Eastman Music school (in downtown) is in a nice area. The Eastman Theater is spectacular! The museums are quite close together and near the Eastman school. They would include the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester Museum and Science Center, Strong Museum (the National Toy Hall of Fame) http://www.strongmuseum.org , The George Eastman House (world’s preeminent museum of photography) http://www.eastmanhouse.org. Rochester is quite proud of their museums and rightlfully so. Someone mentioned Park Ave, and that is a fun area of the city, but not near the U of R. The Dinosaur BBQ is a fun place and near the city Library, Blue Cross Arena (site of our big concerts)<a href=“Rory Gallagher: il chitarrista blues-rock irlandese dalla camicia a scacchi - Tick -Co”>Pensi che il tuo telefono sia stato spiato o ascoltato dal marito - Tick -Co;

The U of R campus is filled with brick structures with white trim and a giant quad. The campus is completely contained and not merged with the surrounding neighborhoods (see earlier post). I think of the campus as fairly compact, but you might disagree if you hiked around it all day. The Medical Center is a VERY BUSY place and just off the campus.

Being a resident of the surrounding Rochester area is very nice. The city is big enough to have lots to offer but small enough that you can get everywhere in 20 minutes. Skiing is 40 minutes away and the season just ended last weekend, Lake Ontario borders the city to the north and of course the Finger Lakes to the south. If you tire of the city surroundings, the beautiful countryside is easy to get to without much effort.

Hope this helps to explain the area better.

Cool, sounds like there’s plenty to do around the city and on campus.
My concern now though - is the high homicide rate and the 50% of the city that’s pretty much a high crime area - how wary should we be of that area?

Hey- you are a NYC boy, you know how to be alert and make wise choices in a city ? The campus of U of R is safe and lovely, you just want to use your smarts when you leave the immediate campus.

It’s not like Rochester is just crime ridden by any means, there are just better areas then others. We were in the city last night with 4 kids at 10:30 pm seeing the Broadway Production of Lion King (btw, our tickets were only $43 not the $100 NYC price tag) and I wasn’t concerned.

As a location, Rochester has some wonderful places to discover and a rich history.
