As the mother of two young women, one of whom is considering a career in academia, specifically economics, I’m saddened by the results of this study.
This isn’t surprising. I really don’t understand how dual-career families make it work. It’s just mindblowing to me.
I knew that if I wanted to go into academia that I would need a SAHP. I think I’m the only one of my female PhD student friends who has a partner that wants to stay at home. It’ll be interesting to see how we all do as we move through academia.
If only men in academia would use parental leave actually to participate equally in parenting, instead of as a de facto opportunity to devote all their time to research and publishing! A pipe dream, I suppose.
