Study Plan For SAT?

Hi, I’m going to be a junior next year and I’m currently scoring about 1900-2000 on practice SAT’s. I am currently taking a class from critical reading and writing, but it’s not helping much. Do you guys have any study suggestions/books? I want to get up to 2200+ and am willing to put in 3-4 hours studying a day. Thanks!

If your grammar and vocabulary are solid, I would forgo the class entirely (perhaps ask for a refund if it’s not helping enough?). The best thing to do is review common SAT tricks and know what they’re looking for. That alone bumped up my writing score 100 points without any other preparation.

I would recommend buying the Official SAT Study Guide 2nd Edition (The Blue Book) for its ten official SAT practice tests. If you are missing quite a few sentence completion questions on the Critical Reading section, you may want to memorize some vocabulary lists. I have never personally used it, but Direct Hits Volume 1 & 2 is said to increase Critical Reading scores a lot. SparkNotes 1000 is also a good list.

This forum is a great source for SAT prep advice and has many good resources. Check out “Everyone, read this before posting: Best of SAT Prep Forum and FAQs,” the first thread in the SAT Preparation forum. For writing advice, check out SilverTurtle’s Guide to the SAT. There are many links to threads detailing how people achieved perfect scores on the SAT, which would be helpful for you. There are also many links to official SAT practice tests in the thread.

Good luck on the SAT and I hope you reach your goal! With practice and preparation, you can score a 2200 or higher!

Thanks guys! In my class, we’re using Kaplan’s Score-Raising Dictionary. It’s pretty helpful so far, and I am doing quite a bit better on the sentence completions. Any other book suggestions?
